Chapter 8 - The Ward Foundation

Emily looked down at the gold pen resting on the black marble.

She thought of her father. She remembered him sitting at their cramped kitchen table in his oil-stained work shirts, carefully soldering circuit boards while helping her with her fourth-grade science homework. She remembered him telling her that a person’s real wealth was measured by how many people they lifted up, not how much they hoarded behind high walls.

She looked at Walter Vance—an eighty-year-old billionaire who had spent four weeks shuffling through the cold rain in a frayed coat, eating day-old bread, just to make sure she was safe.

She picked up the gold pen.

"I am not going to fire you, Gregory," Emily said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the quiet library.

Gregory blinked in stunned disbelief. "You're... you're keeping me on?"

"You didn't run away from the truth," Emily said. "You confessed. You brought the records to light. But things are going to change at Sterling Global."

She turned to the lead attorney.

"Draft three amendments to the corporate charter immediately," Emily instructed, her instincts sharpening into focus. "First: The pediatric oncology drug will be manufactured and distributed at cost. Zero profit margin. Any family that cannot afford it will receive it free of charge through an endowment funded by my royalty escrow."

Walter Vance leaned back in his chair, a slow, radiant smile spreading across his weathered face, his pale eyes shining with unshed tears of pure pride.

"Second," Emily continued, signing her name across the bottom of the primary restitution deed with a firm, unbroken stroke. "The company is officially renamed The Ward-Sterling Bio-Tech Group. My father's name goes on the building downtown."

"And the third condition?" Gregory asked, his voice thick with emotion.

Emily set the pen down.

"Third: We are establishing the Thomas Ward Restitution Trust with one hundred million dollars of my personal capital. Its sole purpose will be providing emergency grants, housing assistance, and legal defense for low-wage hourly workers who are abused, exploited, or illegally terminated by corporate bullies."

She looked straight at Gregory.

"Starting with every single employee who ever worked under Arthur Henderson at Crestview Bakery."
