Chapter 9 - The Vows on the Bluffs

That winter, on a crisp, snowy Saturday afternoon in December—exactly one year after a bleeding old woman collapsed on a rain-slick curb outside Eddie’s Diner—the private cedar chapel on the bluffs of the Oyster Bay estate was decorated with thousands of blooming white gardenias, fragrant pine boughs, and flickering beeswax candles.

It was our wedding day.

There were no syndicate treaties, no political alliances, and no fear.

There were only sixty of our closest friends, our loyal staff, Mrs. Rosa Falcone, my brother Leo, Dr. Sarah Lin, Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Reed, and the working-class families from the Brooklyn docks who had stood with us through the storm.

An antique cedar arbor adorned with cascading white orchids stood at the edge of the limestone terrace overlooking the crystal-blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

A string quartet played a sweet, triumphant Italian processional as I walked down the petal-strewn aisle on the arm of my brother Leo, who stood tall, proud, and completely healed in his tailored black tuxedo.

I wore an exquisite, custom-tailored gown of ivory French lace, my dark hair styled in soft, elegant waves adorned with delicate pearl pins, a small gold pendant containing my father’s original inspection badge resting proudly against my heart.

Matteo stood at the altar in a bespoke black tuxedo, his slate-gray eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that silenced the world.

When I reached his side, he took both of my hands into his, his fingers strong, warm, and trembling with sacred devotion.

Father Thomas, a kind parish priest who had served our community for thirty years, smiled warmly as he raised his hands in blessing.

Matteo took a slow, deep breath, his voice steady, rich, and vibrating with absolute, eternal love:

"Violet," Matteo said, looking deep into my eyes. "For sixteen years, I lived in a fortress of stone, shadows, and blood, believing that power was measured by the enemies I destroyed and the fear I commanded. You walked into my mother’s life out of a freezing thunderstorm, you gave away your last dollar and your own sweater to save a stranger, and you showed me that true greatness is found only in the quiet courage of an honest heart. Today, before God and our families, I give you my life, my name, and my soul. I promise to stand between you and every storm, to cherish your brilliant spirit, and to love you with an unbroken, sovereign truth for all the days of our lives."

Tears of pure, radiant joy spilled down my cheeks as I slipped the heavy platinum band onto his finger.

"Matteo," I smiled through my tears, my voice full of boundless peace. "You tore down the walls of our prison to bring my brother and me home. You gave my father his justice, and you gave my heart a sanctuary that will never fall. I choose you today, tomorrow, and for all the days of our lives."

Father Thomas raised his hands in a quiet blessing. "By the power of love, truth, and restored honor, I pronounce you husband and wife."

Matteo pulled me into his arms, lifting me slightly off the stone terrace, and kissed me—a deep, sacred promise of an unbroken future built on truth, courage, and unconditional love.

The chapel erupted into thunderous, standing applause as Rosa wept tears of joy from the front pew, and Leo let out a triumphant cheer that echoed off the vaulted cedar rafters toward the heavens.
