Chapter 6 - The Siege of 5th Avenue

"Down! Everyone get down now!" Agent Reyes shouted, drawing her standard-issue Glock from its holster and positioning herself between Clara and the executive suite’s double doors.
Judge Thornton stepped forward, using his heavy body and oak cane to shield the young girl against the limestone hearth. He reached beneath his long coat, producing a snub-nosed revolver—an old habit from his days as a federal prosecutor.
The elevator chimed on the sixty-fourth floor with a sickening, cheerful tone.
DING.
The heavy metal doors slid open, and the darkness of the hallway was instantly ripped apart by the deafening roar of automatic gunfire.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
A hail of armor-piercing rounds shattered the glass walls of the conference room, spraying pulverized crystal across the parquet floors. Two federal marshals stationed in the outer hallway collapsed before they could return fire, their tactical vests catching the brunt of the kinetic impact.
Stepping through the smoke was Viktor Kane.
He was six-foot-three, built like an iron pillar, dressed in midnight-black tactical gear, a heavy Kevlar vest, and a ballistic mask covering the lower half of his scarred face. In his gloved hands, he held a customized short-barreled tactical rifle, its muzzle smoking in the crimson glow of the emergency lights.
Kane did not run. He walked with the heavy, unhurried precision of an apex predator that knew its prey was trapped on an island in the sky.
"Sarah Reyes," Kane’s voice rumbled through the shattered entryway, muffled by his mask yet dripping with venomous amusement. "Did you really think an FBI perimeter would keep me out of this building? I designed the security layout for Arthur Vance twelve years ago. I know every service conduit, every blind spot, and every dead zone."
Agent Reyes leaned out from behind a concrete pillar, firing three rapid shots.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Two rounds struck Kane’s heavy ceramic chest plate, barely slowing his momentum. The third ricocheted off his shoulder pauldron with a shower of orange sparks.
Kane pivoted with frightening speed, returning fire in a controlled burst that tore through the drywall inches from Reyes’s head, forcing her to duck back into cover as plaster dust filled the air.
"Give me the child, Sarah!" Kane shouted, his boots crunching over the carpet of broken glass as he advanced down the executive corridor. "Donald and the board are spineless cowards who folded the moment handcuffs touched their wrists. But I have offshore accounts that need verification codes. I take the girl, I take the dispatch case, and I disappear into South America. Stay in my way, and you die in this office."
Inside the private office, Clara looked up at Judge Thornton. Her face was pale, but her breathing was remarkably steady.
"Uncle Henry," she whispered urgently. "The service terminal behind the desk. Does it still have battery power?"
Judge Thornton glanced at the corner workstation. "Yes! It runs on an independent uninterruptible power supply! But what can—"
"Arthur Vance didn't just build vaults for money, Uncle Henry," Clara said, her voice dropping into an eerily calm register. "He built this entire tower as a defensive bunker."
Before Judge Thornton could stop her, Clara slipped from behind the hearth, dropped to her hands and knees, and crawled silently across the floor, staying beneath the sightlines of the shattered windows. She slid behind the massive mahogany desk, her small fingers flying across the auxiliary keyboard with lightning speed.
On the screen, a green command prompt flickered:
VANCE EXECUTIVE OVERRIDE: AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Clara pressed her right palm flat against the glass optical scanner embedded in the desk surface.
BIOMETRIC MATCH: CLARA VANCE. CLEARANCE LEVEL: OMNI.
Outside in the corridor, Viktor Kane was ten feet from the office doorway, raising his rifle to execute Agent Reyes, who had run out of ammunition and was reaching for her backup blade.
"Goodbye, Agent Reyes," Kane sneered, tightening his finger around the trigger.
"Override engaged," Clara murmured behind the desk, pressing the enter key.
CLACK-CLACK-CLACK!
From the ceiling of the sixty-fourth floor, heavy, interlocking titanium blast shutters slammed down with hydraulic fury, sealing every corridor, every window, and every elevator shaft. At the same instant, high-intensity ultraviolet strobes flared to life throughout the hallway, accompanied by an ear-splitting, acoustic disruption siren that operated at ninety decibels.
Kane screamed in agony, dropping his rifle to clutch his ears as the acoustic wave scrambled his inner ear and equilibrium. The strobes blinded him, reflecting off his tactical goggles in a disorienting kaleidoscope of blinding white light.
Disoriented, Kane stumbled backward, crashing into a shattered display case.
Agent Reyes did not hesitate. Drawing her taser from her hip holster, she lunged through the blinding strobes and fired twin dart probes directly into Kane’s exposed neck beneath his helmet.
Fifty thousand volts of electricity surged through the assassin's nervous system. Viktor Kane convulsed violently, his muscles locking in agonizing spasms, before he collapsed face-first onto the glass-covered floor, completely neutralized.
The sirens abruptly silenced as Clara entered the secondary command. The crimson emergency lights shifted back to a calm, steady amber.
Agent Reyes stood over the fallen assassin, panting heavily, her face covered in sweat and plaster dust. She looked through the office doorway at the nine-year-old girl sitting calmly behind the mahogany desk, her small hands resting neatly in her lap.
"Clara," Reyes gasped, shaking her head in sheer, unadulterated awe. "What kind of little girl are you?"
May you like
Clara looked up, offering the faintest, gentlest smile.
"I am Arthur Vance's daughter," she said softly. "And this is my house."
