Chapter 6 - The Portrait on the Wall

Late autumn sunlight streamed through the tall arched windows of the penthouse living room, casting warm amber pools across the hardwood floors.

The apartment—once a cold, minimalist bachelor pad designed by a corporate interior decorator—had undergone a radical, beautiful transformation over the last three months. Bookshelves now lined the walls, overflowing with architectural digests, children's storybooks, and botanical encyclopedias. A plush sage-green sofa sat by the fireplace, and scattered across the coffee table were half-finished coloring books, colored pencils, and a well-loved plush rabbit missing one black button eye.

Adrian stood by the open kitchen island, pouring two glasses of fresh lemonade, listening to the soft murmur of laughter coming from the sunroom down the hall.

He walked out of the kitchen, carrying the glasses, and paused in the doorway of the sunroom.

Maya sat at her wooden drafting table, her charcoal pencil sweeping gracefully across heavy sketch paper as she designed a tiered botanical garden for a client in Lincoln Park. Sitting right beside her on a high stool, wearing a paint-splattered smock over her denim overalls, was Sophie.

The little girl was carefully dabbing watercolors onto a sheet of heavy construction paper, humming a little tune under her breath.

"Mommy, look," Sophie held up her painting proudly. "I painted a house for us. And I gave it a big green door, just like our old apartment."

Maya smiled, leaning over to kiss the top of Sophie’s brown curls. "It's beautiful, sweetie. Exactly like our door."

Adrian walked in quietly, setting the glasses down on the edge of the drafting table. He reached out, wrapping his arms around Maya’s waist from behind, pressing his face into the crook of her neck and breathing in her familiar scent of vanilla and rain.

Maya leaned back against his chest with a contented sigh, her hands covering his where they rested over her heart.

"How was the board meeting?" she asked softly, turning her head to press a gentle kiss against his jaw.

"Quiet," Adrian smiled against her skin. "Uncle Richard is currently negotiating the finer points of federal prison food with his defense attorneys. Vale International is fully restructured, the board has officially ratified my new executive mandate... and I have never owned a company I cared less about."

Maya laughed, turning around in his embrace and wrapping her arms around his neck. "Oh? And what do you care about, Mr. Vale?"

Adrian looked past her shoulder, catching the bright, amber gaze of their daughter, who was currently giggling at them and waving a paintbrush dripping with blue watercolor in the air.

He looked back down into Maya’s amber eyes—eyes that held the entire history of his past, his present, and his future.

"I care about this," Adrian whispered, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep kiss that tasted like home, forgiveness, and absolute peace. "Just this."

Sophie slid off her stool, trotted over to them, and wrapped her small arms around both of their legs, squeezing tightly.

"Are we a family now?" she asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes.

Adrian knelt down, sweeping both Maya and Sophie into his arms, holding them as if he would never, ever let them go.

"We were always a family, sweetheart," Adrian whispered, a tear of pure, unadulterated joy slipping down his cheek. "We just took a very long time finding our way home."
