Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Vault

By 1:30 AM, the Moretti estate in Oyster Bay was operating under a tier-one sovereign lockdown.
The sprawling three-hundred-acre compound was encircled by perimeter motion sensors, twenty armed sentries, and floodlights that bathed the coastline in brilliant white halogen light.
In the sunlit east wing, Mrs. Gable, the trusted head housekeeper, had tucked both Emma and Oliver into a massive four-poster bed in the private family suite. Exhausted from the terror of the evening, the two siblings lay fast asleep, Oliver clutching his stuffed bear, his small arm wrapped securely over Emma’s shoulder.
Downstairs, in the reinforced security vault beneath the manor, Christian and I stood before a steel interrogation table.
Beatrice Vance sat strapped to a heavy iron chair, her designer silk blouse torn, her makeup ruined by frantic, humiliated tears.
Spread across the table were twelve encrypted flash drives, three forged custody petitions, and the bank routing ledgers recovered from Beatrice’s laptop.
"Explain the black van, Beatrice," Christian said, his baritone dropping into a register of quiet, terrifying finality.
Beatrice wept hysterically, looking up at the man she had secretly plotted to ruin.
"Marcus Vance offered me twenty million dollars, Christian!" Beatrice screamed. "Under my sister’s testamentary trust, if Oliver died before his fifth birthday, fifty percent of the Atlantic maritime leases reverted unconditionally to the Vance family! I was supposed to deliver Oliver to Marcus’s transport in Queens... but the boy slipped out of the car when I was buying coffee!"
"And the shooters on 31st Avenue?" I asked, stepping into the light, my hazel eyes burning with righteous fury.
"When Oliver’s phone pinged at your address, Marcus sent his tactical team to eliminate everyone in the house!" Beatrice sobbed. "He didn't know who lived there—he just wanted Oliver dead before Christian found him!"
Christian did not shout. He reached out, picked up the encrypted flash drives from the table, and handed them to Marco.
"Deliver these files directly to Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed," Christian ordered softly. "Have the federal marshals execute the arrest warrants on Marcus Vance in Boston before sunrise."

Christian looked back at Beatrice with the cold, unshakeable indifference of a sovereign watching dust blow away in the wind.
"And take this traitor to the federal holding facility in Lower Manhattan," Christian commanded. "She will never see the sky as a free woman again."
