Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Ledger

Thirty thousand feet above the Atlantic, cruising south toward Manhattan, the Sikorsky’s cabin was silent save for the drone of the turbines.

Adrian sat stripped to the waist while Marco applied fresh pressure bandages to his side. The stitches had torn partially, but the bleeding was manageable. Adrian didn't seem to care. His attention was locked on the aluminum case open on the small table between the seats.

Wren sat wrapped in three emergency blankets, a mug of black coffee steaming untouched between her hands.

Inside the case lay the original, un-amended Vance Trust Agreement of 1994, signed by Arthur Vance, Eleanor Vance, and witnessed by three federal judges. Attached to it, preserved in acid-free sleeves, were the complete financial records of Julian Vance’s systematic embezzlement from the maritime union funds between 2008 and 2014—documents Arthur had compiled just weeks before his death.

And at the very bottom lay a certified copy of Julianna’s birth certificate, complete with her infant footprints and a genetic profile registered with the New York State Surrogate's Court.

"He didn't just burn the house to kill me," Wren said quietly, staring at the papers. "He burned it because Father was going to hand these to the United States Attorney on December twenty-sixth."

Adrian turned the page. "Julian didn't act alone. Look at the signatures on these transfer receipts."

Wren leaned in. Her eyes narrowed. "Sebastian Cross."

"Cross wasn't just a corporate raider," Adrian said, his voice flat and deadly. "He financed Julian’s takeover. In exchange, Julian gave him sixty percent of the container terminals in Red Hook and Newark. They used the Vance shipping lines to move untracked munitions and illicit capital for the European syndicates."

Adrian looked at his watch. Three-fifteen.

"The board meeting at Vance-Kane Tower starts in forty-five minutes," Marco said, checking his phone. "Julian Vance and Sebastian Cross just entered the building through the VIP garage. They have six private security details on the floor. boss, they're not just taking the vote. They've invited the press. They're announcing the 'historic merger' of Vance Logistics and Cross Global at four-thirty."

Adrian closed the aluminum case with a sharp, metallic snap.

"Let them bring the press," he said.

He turned to Wren. Her eyes were wide, the ghosts of the culvert still lingering in her pupils, but beneath the fear, something new had ignited—a cold, diamond-hard resolve that Adrian recognized instantly. It was the same look Arthur Vance had worn when he broke the dock strikes of '04.

"You can't walk into that room in tactical gear, Birdie," Adrian said.

"I don't need a dress to look my father's murderer in the eye," she replied.

"You don't need a dress," Adrian agreed, his mouth curving into a savage, uncompromising smile. "You need armor. And I know exactly where to get it."
