Chapter 5 - The Surveillance in the File

Three weeks later, Lily was transferred to the state-of-the-art Moretti Pediatric Rehabilitation Pavilion in Glen Cove, Long Island.
Her recovery had progressed with astonishing speed. With the nerve tether released, daily physical therapy had restored seventy percent of her quadriceps strength. She was standing between parallel bars for ten minutes at a time, laughing as she took supported steps with lightweight carbon-fiber braces.
I was sitting in the pavilion's private family lounge on a Tuesday afternoon, reviewing Lily’s physical therapy charts, when Arthur Ross—seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling International Legal, the supreme corporate litigator who had served the Moretti family for four decades—walked into the room.
Arthur wore an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his expression grave and unyielding as he set an unsealed, red-tabbed leather portfolio onto the table before me.
"Good afternoon, Clara," Arthur said, his deep baritone carrying the cold finality of an executioner reading a docket.
"Arthur," I said, setting down my pen. "Is something wrong with the hospital trust?"
"The trust is secure, Clara," Arthur replied, opening the portfolio. "The threat is external. Look at what our private intelligence unit extracted from the servers of Apex Harbor Logistics at noon today."
He rotated an encrypted tablet toward me.
On the screen was a detailed surveillance dossier:
TARGET: LILY VANCE (AGE 7) // REHABILITATION TRACKING MANIFEST
LOCATION: MORETTI REHABILITATION PAVILION // ROOM 4B
PHYSICAL SCHEDULE: PARALLEL BARS AT 2:00 PM // HYDROTHERAPY AT 4:30 PM
PRIMARY VULNERABILITY: UNESCORTED TRANSPORT BETWEEN PAVILION & RESIDENTIAL WING.
My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit of icy terror.
Attached to the schedule were thirty high-resolution photographs: Lily smiling on Forty-Second Street with her cardboard sign; Lily being loaded into the Escalade in Astoria; Lily being wheeled through the hospital lobby; and photographs of our apartment door in Queens with red grease-pencil crosshairs drawn across our lock.
"Someone has been tracking her schedule for three months," I breathed, my hands trembling violently as I touched the screen.
"Not just someone, Clara," Arthur Ross stated, his jaw tightening into iron. "Julian Moretti. Your father’s murderer."
Arthur swiped the screen, illuminating an unsealed, gold-embossed corporate transfer instrument:
THE HUDSON-EAST RIVER INFRASTRUCTURE MERGER // $180,000,000.00
PRIMARY ASSET: 65% CONTROLLING PREFERRED SHARES IN PORT NEWARK BERTHS 1 THROUGH 8
RESTRICTION: REQUIRES UNANIMOUS LINEAL CONSENT OF THE SALVATORE MORETTI ESTATE & THOMAS VANCE HEIRS.
"Julian has been attempting to finalize a hostile takeover of the deepwater container terminals with an offshore private equity syndicate in Zurich," Arthur revealed. "Under the 1998 charter your father helped draft, the terminal leases cannot be sold to foreign entities without the written signature of Thomas Vance’s direct lineal heir: you."
"Julian knew where we were all along," I realized, the horror suffocating me. "He was waiting for Lily’s surgery."
"He was waiting for Lily to be in a confined clinical environment," Arthur confirmed. "Julian planned to abduct Lily from the rehabilitation wing tomorrow afternoon, using her life as leverage to force you to sign the terminal transfer deed before the Commission's annual assembly on Friday."
The heavy double oak doors of the lounge were suddenly thrown open.
Dominic Moretti walked into the room, dressed in an immaculate, bespoke midnight-blue three-piece wool suit, his slate-gray eyes burning with terrifying, absolute finality.
"Arthur," Dominic spoke, his voice dropping into an octave of lethal, subterranean granite.

"Yes, Dominic?"
"Assemble four tactical assault teams. Call Detective Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Crimes Division and Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the FBI. We are attending Julian’s private executive luncheon in Manhattan today."
