Chapter 4 - The Wolf in the Boardroom

The eleventh-floor executive conference room of Bennett Global Enterprises was a monument to corporate intimidation. A massive, oval table carved from a single slab of dark Brazilian walnut dominated the center of the room, surrounded by ergonomic leather chairs that cost more than Noah Brooks’s entire annual tuition at the community college. Overhead, a blown-glass chandelier cast a cold, brilliant light across papers, tablets, and the grim faces of the corporation’s elite leadership.

Noah stood quietly in the corner near the mahogany credenza, his hands neatly folded in front of his tailored charcoal trousers. He wore the new Italian-cut suit like armor, though every nerve ending in his body was screaming that he was wildly out of his depth.

Seated at the head of the table was Richard Vance, the Chief Operating Officer. Vance was a man who looked as though he had been genetically engineered in a corporate laboratory: slicked-back silver hair, razor-sharp jawline, eyes the color of frosted steel, and a bespoke Brioni suit that practically whispered contempt for anyone earning less than six figures. To Vance's left and right sat the four remaining members of the executive board—men and women whose expressions mirrored the COO's icy impatience.

"Let's dispense with the pleasantries," Vance said, his voice a smooth, cultured baritone that carried a razor-sharp edge. He didn't look at Noah; he didn't even acknowledge the young man's presence, treating him as little more than a piece of office furniture or an intern hired to pour water. "The emergency shareholder meeting is in less than seventy-two hours. As acting chair of this committee, I want a final confirmation from legal and compliance that all preparations for invoking Clause 14-B are locked down."

A corporate attorney sitting midway down the table adjusted his glasses nervously. "Everything is in place, Mr. Vance. The fabricated medical evaluations from Dr. Sterling are logged in the secure server, and the proxy assignments have been quietly secured from three of our minority institutional investors. Once the board votes unanimously to declare Mr. Bennett incapacitated, his voting rights transfer to the executive committee trusteeship. Bennett Global will be free to pursue the restructuring deal with Apex Capital."

Noah felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. Apex Capital. He had spent the last twenty-four hours deep inside the company's encrypted digital ledgers using the administrative credentials Harold had given him. Apex Capital wasn't a standard investment firm; it was a ruthless corporate vulture fund notorious for buying industrial manufacturing networks, stripping their assets, laying off thousands of blue-collar workers, and selling off the real estate for commercial redevelopment.

If Vance and his conspirators succeeded, the entire foundation that Thomas Brooks and Harold Bennett had spent fifty years building would be wiped out in a week.

"And what about the old man himself?" asked Victoria Sterling, the head of public relations and no relation to the fired pizza manager, though she shared his callous demeanor. "Has anyone verified he isn't going to pull some theatrical stunt at the shareholder assembly? He's been uncharacteristically quiet since he vanished from his estate three nights ago."

"He's wandering the streets, playing the pathetic hermit," Vance scoffed, a cruel smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. "My security detail tracked him down to a convenience store district downtown two nights ago, freezing his old bones on a park bench. The man is losing his grip on reality. By Tuesday, he won't even remember what company he founded."

Noah kept his face completely blank, staring fixedly at a spot on the walnut wall just behind Vance’s head. Inside, however, adrenaline was roaring through his veins. They have no idea, he thought. They think he's broken.

"Excuse me, Mr. Vance."

The smooth, calm voice cut through the heavy silence of the boardroom like a scalpel.

Vance froze, his pen hovering over a stack of legal briefs. He slowly raised his head, his cold eyes shifting across the table until they landed on Noah. For a second, a flicker of genuine confusion crossed the COO's face, quickly masked by haughty irritation.

"Who authorized you to speak?" Vance asked, his voice dripping with condescension. "You're the new administrative assistant... what's your name? Brooks? If you need more coffee pads for the sideboard, talk to building management. The executive committee is in the middle of a confidential session."

Noah didn't flinch. He pushed himself off the credenza, straightened his jacket, and took three measured steps forward until he was standing at the foot of the massive walnut table. He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a gold-plated titanium flash drive, and placed it gently on the polished wood right in front of Vance.

"I'm not here about coffee pads, Mr. Vance," Noah said, his voice steady, clear, and devoid of any retail-flat nervousness. "I'm here on behalf of the majority shareholder and founder, Mr. Harold Bennett."

The atmosphere in the room plummeted from arrogant confidence to absolute, suffocating ice. The attorneys and board members stared at Noah as if he had just dropped a live grenade on the table.

Vance slowly pushed his chair back, standing up to his full, imposing height. He leaned over the table, glaring down at Noah with narrowed eyes. "You arrogant little nobody. Do you have any idea where you are? You're standing in a private executive briefing. If you think you can walk in here with some childish stunt—"

"It's not a stunt," Noah interrupted, his voice cutting off the COO mid-sentence. He tapped the flash drive with the tip of his finger. "That drive contains verified digital transcripts of every communication between you, Dr. Sterling, and the principals of Apex Capital regarding the illegal acquisition of subsidiary assets below market value. It also contains the financial audit trail proving the falsification of the medical records intended for use in invoking Clause 14-B."

Color instantly drained from Vance’s face. The cool, unshakable corporate facade cracked, revealing a frantic, cornered animal underneath. "That's... that's complete fabrication. Lies! Security! Remove this lunatic from the building immediately—!"

"You can call security," Noah said, stepping back slightly, his eyes locked onto Vance's panicked expression. "Or you can open the file on that drive right now and see that the copies have already been automatically transmitted to federal regulatory authorities, the SEC, and every major media outlet in the country, set on a delayed release timer that goes off the second my thumbprint disconnects from the administrative terminal downstairs."

The silence in the room was so heavy it felt physical. One of the female board members gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, while the corporate attorney slumped back into his chair, whispering a string of profanities under his breath.

Vance stared at the flash drive as if it were a venomous snake. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, his professional armor completely shattered.

Before Vance could find his voice, the heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open with a resounding bang.

The security detail parted, and stepping into the room with a firm, measured stride was Harold Bennett. He wore his navy three-piece suit, his silver pocket watch chain gleaming in the chandelier light, and his pale-blue eyes burned with absolute, unyielding fury.

"Meeting's adjourned, Richard," Harold said, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls like a thunderclap. "Pack your things. You're going to need a very good lawyer."
