Chapter 7 - The Midnight Audit

The forensic audit of the Crimson Anchor began before noon and did not stop when the dinner rush started. Corporate investigators swarmed the restaurant, pulling financial records, reviewing security camera footage from the past three years, and cross-referencing inventory logs. What they uncovered was a systemic nightmare of corruption, petty cruelty, and administrative abuse.

It turned out Arthur Vance had been systematically pocketing bonuses meant for front-of-house staff, falsifying health inspection reports to avoid costly kitchen repairs, and firing employees on a whim whenever they questioned his authority. The audit team also found dozens of complaints filed against him by former employees—complaints that Arthur had quietly intercepted and shredded before human resources could ever see them.

By 4:00 PM, Arthur was escorted out of the building by corporate security, carrying his personal belongings in a cardboard box, his reputation completely destroyed and his name blacklisted across the entire hospitality industry.

Meanwhile, back in his West Side apartment, Leo Carter was sitting at the kitchen table with his mother, staring in absolute disbelief at a stack of official corporate documents delivered by courier an hour earlier.

Margaret Carter wiped tears of pure joy from her cheeks as she read the letters aloud.

"Leo... look at this," she choked out, her voice trembling. "The tuition grant... the medical trust... and... and an executive internship offer at the corporate headquarters starting next Monday."

Leo sat in stunned silence, tracing the embossed gold seal of Sterling-Gourmet Hospitality on the paper. The nightmare of impending eviction and unpaid medical bills had evaporated in less than twenty-four hours, replaced by a horizon so bright and vast he could scarcely comprehend it.

"He really did this," Leo whispered, thinking of the old man eating the warm ribeye in the freezing rain. "He remembered."

"Kindness is never wasted, son," Margaret smiled gently, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand. "Sometimes, the universe just takes a little longer to pay you back."

That evening, a phone call from an unknown private number chimed on Leo’s cell phone. He answered it cautiously.

"Hello, Leo," the deep, resonant voice of Harrison Vance came through the speaker.

"Mr. Vance," Leo said, straightening up instinctively in his chair. "I... I don't even know how to thank you. The documents arrived. My mother’s medical care is fully covered, and... I start at headquarters next week."

"Save your thanks for your mother, Leo," Harrison chuckled warmly on the other end of the line. "She raised a good man. And as for your new job—don't expect any special treatment. I run a tight ship, and I expect the same dedication in the boardroom that you showed in the dish pit."

"I won't let you down, sir," Leo promised firmly.

"I know you won't," Harrison replied. "Rest up this weekend, son. Monday morning at eight o'clock, we have an empire to run."
