Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

The flashbang detonated with the fury of a dying star.

Even with my eyes clamped shut behind Julian’s body, the searing white light burned through my eyelids. The concussive wave slammed into my ears like an iron mallet, turning the world into a ringing, disorienting vacuum of white noise.

Petrov and his four shooters screamed in agony, their hands flying to their eyes as their night-vision optics fried into their retinas.

Julian and Damen moved in perfect, terrifying synchronization.

They didn't hesitate. They didn't communicate with words. They were two halves of the same lethal mechanism, raised by the same ruthless patriarch to be the most dangerous men in the hemisphere.

Julian surged forward through the smoke like a striking cobra, closing the distance in three explosive strides. His combat blade flashed in the red emergency light, slicing through the throat of the lead shotgunner before the man could clear his vision. In the same motion, Julian spun, driving his elbow into the temple of the second operative, seizing the falling man's shotgun and firing a point-blank blast into the chest plate of the third.

On his right flank, Damen was a whirlwind of controlled violence. Despite the bleeding wound on his arm, he dropped to one knee, firing his submachine gun in disciplined, three-round bursts, neutralizing the fourth guard with terrifying precision.

Petrov, half-blinded and roaring like a wounded bear, swung his heavy assault rifle blindly through the air, firing a chaotic spray of heavy rounds.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

The bullets shattered the remaining glass panels of the skybridge, sending shards of crystal raining three hundred feet down into the dark street below.

"Julian!" I screamed, pressing Leo flat against the marble tiles as rounds chewed through the ceiling above us.

Julian didn't duck. He lunged straight through the gunfire, tackling Petrov around the waist with the momentum of a freight train.

The two massive men crashed against the edge of the skybridge, slamming into the waist-high steel parapet where the glass had been blown out into the storm. Below them, the street was a dizzying abyss of wet asphalt and flashing police cruisers four blocks away.

Petrov dropped his rifle, his massive hands locking around Julian's throat with crushing, suffocating force.

"I'll take you down with me, Cross!" Petrov choked out, blood leaking from his nose as he drove Julian’s upper body backward over the three-hundred-foot drop. "We both die tonight!"

Julian’s face turned crimson, the scars on his neck bulging as Petrov’s thumbs dug into his windpipe. Julian clawed at Petrov’s wrists, his boots slipping on the wet marble, his balance tipping precariously over the edge.

He's going over, my mind screamed in pure, unadulterated terror. He's going to fall.

"Julian!" I shrieked, trying to scramble forward, but Leo’s weight pinned me down.

A sharp, metallic CLACK sounded directly behind Petrov.

Alexei Petrov froze.

Standing behind the Russian mobster, holding Julian’s fallen tactical pistol pressed firmly against the base of Petrov's skull, was Damen Cross.

Damen’s suit was shredded, his face streaked with soot and blood, but his amber eyes were as calm and merciless as the ocean depths.

"Get your filthy hands off my brother," Damen whispered.

Petrov’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying comprehension.

BANG.

Damen pulled the trigger without a fraction of a second's hesitation.

Petrov’s body went limp instantly. Julian wrenched himself free, rolling back onto the solid marble floor of the bridge as Petrov’s massive frame tipped over the shattered railing, tumbling silently into the howling storm below, swallowed by the three-hundred-foot drop into the void.

Julian lay on his back on the wet floor, his chest heaving in violent, agonizing gasps, his hands clutching his bruised throat.

Damen stood over him, the smoking gun hanging loosely in his fingers. The wind howled through the ruined walkway, carrying freezing rain that washed the blood across the marble.

For five long, agonizing seconds, neither man moved.

Then, Damen reached down his right hand.

Julian looked up at the offered hand. A faint, bloody smile touched his lips. He reached out, his scarred, calloused fingers gripping Damen’s forearm, and allowed his younger brother to haul him to his feet.

"You're late, Damen," Julian rasped, coughing violently.

"You were always terrible at timing, Julian," Damen replied, his voice shaking with a mixture of exhaustion and raw, long-buried affection.

I scrambled to my feet, tears blinding my vision, and threw myself into Julian’s arms. Julian caught me and Leo, burying his face in my hair, his arms wrapping around both of us with a fierce, desperate strength that shut out the cold, the wind, and the blood on the floor.

Leo peeked out from beneath the Kevlar blanket, looking up at his father’s scarred face with wide, curious eyes.

"Uncle Shadow?" Leo asked softly, reaching out a tiny finger to touch the silver burn mark on Julian's jaw. "Are you okay?"

May you like

Julian let out a choked, tearful laugh, his forehead resting against our son’s temple.

"I'm okay, little fox," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "And I'm not Uncle Shadow anymore. I'm your dad."
