Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

The ballroom was so quiet you could hear the distant hum of the hotel’s air conditioning units. Victoria stood motionless, her carefully constructed world crumbling around her in real time. All her ambitions, all her scheming, all her subtle maneuvers to isolate Sophie and position herself as the sole queen of the Sterling household had just collided with an immovable, iron-clad legal wall.
"You... you lied to me," Victoria whispered, her eyes darting frantically toward me. "Julian, you knew about this? You trapped me?"
"I didn't know," I said honestly, staring at my father in absolute shock. I had lived my entire life believing I would eventually inherit the empire naturally. I had never known about the specific conditions attached to Sophie’s inheritance, nor the significance of the toy my mother had handed to my newborn daughter on her deathbed.
"Of course he didn't know," Arthur said sharply. "If Julian had known, his bleeding heart would have warned you, and you would have worn a different mask for another year, wouldn't you, Victoria?"
Victoria’s face flushed bright red, humiliation battling with pure, unadulterated fury. She realized then that her mask had slipped completely. The ambitious, calculating woman beneath the designer gown was laid bare for two hundred of the city’s most elite witnesses to see.
"This is a ridiculous, archaic stunt!" Victoria snapped, her voice rising in desperate defiance as she abandoned all pretense of social grace. "You're letting an old man's senile ghost and a bratty child dictate how a modern corporate dynasty operates! You're all pathetic!"
She turned on her heel, intending to storm out of the ballroom in a dramatic display of misplaced pride.
"Security," Arthur said calmly, not even raising his voice.

Before Victoria reached the massive double doors of the ballroom, two towering security guards in immaculate black suits stepped out from the shadows, blocking her path. They didn't touch her, but their presence was an absolute, unyielding wall.
"Mrs. Sterling's access credentials to all corporate and residential properties have been permanently revoked as of thirty seconds ago," Arthur announced to the room, looking toward the lead guard. "Escort her off the premises. Her personal belongings will be packed and shipped to a temporary address by morning."
