Chapter 7 - The Morning on Elm Street

At eight o'clock the following morning, the freezing sleet had cleared from the Chicago sky, leaving the winter air crisp, cold, and clean as fresh well water.
Outside the modest brick bungalow on Elm Street in Des Plaines, the atmosphere had undergone a quiet, magnificent resurrection.
A sleek black Mercedes-Benz pulled to the curb outside the house. Martha Parker stepped out onto the front porch, wearing her winter coat, holding a cup of coffee. She looked at the driveway, where a foundation crew was already unspooling hoses and laying out landscaping equipment to repair the sagging porch and fix the broken driveway paving.
The front door of the bungalow opened, and Ethan stepped out onto the porch, wearing his brand-new charcoal suit, carrying a leather briefcase.
"Mom," Ethan smiled, walking over to hug her tightly. "Are you ready?"
Martha looked at her son, tears shining in her eyes. "Ethan... a lawyer from LaSalle Street came by at seven o'clock. The mortgage is fully paid off. The hospital zeroed out my balance. And... and they said you're a director at Sterling Global."
May you like
"I am, Mom," Ethan said softly, kissing her cheek. "And you're never working another double shift at the laundromat again."
As they walked down the front steps toward the waiting car, Martha looked up at the bright winter sun, feeling a profound, unburdened peace settle deep within her chest. The storm had passed. The road ahead was clear.
