Chapter 3 - The Rail Terminal Depths

Beneath the sprawling concrete labyrinth of the city’s central rail terminal, the air smelled of stale diesel exhaust, damp ballast, and ozone. It was a subterranean maze of disused maintenance tunnels, rusted freight elevators, and echoing service catwalks where the city’s underground pulse beat beneath miles of reinforced concrete.

Bound tightly with heavy steel chains to a rusted steel I-beam in a forgotten signal room, David Vance stared into the dim, flickering amber glow of a single overhead incandescent bulb. His body ached from the brutal beating he had received at Range Seven, his ribs throbbing with every shallow breath.

Yet, his mind remained razor-sharp, calculating every variable. He knew Colonel Vance’s operational profile; the colonel was arrogant, meticulous, and obsessed with total control. But Colonel Vance had underestimated one critical factor: Noah.

A soft, metallic scrape echoed from the shadows near the tunnel entrance.

David’s head snapped up.

Stepping out from behind a stack of weathered wooden crates was not a tactical guard. It was Sergeant Miller—a young, green military police recruit whom David had secretly mentored years ago before his retirement. Miller looked terrified, his hands trembling as he gripped a heavy bolt cutter.

"Sergeant Vance! Thank God you're still breathing," Miller whispered frantically, rushing forward and snapping the jaws of the bolt cutter around the thick steel chain anchoring David to the beam.

Clack.

The heavy chain fell away, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. David rubbed his raw, bleeding wrists, wincing as the circulation rushed back into his arms.

"Miller, you're out of your mind being down here," David hissed, pulling himself up onto unsteady legs. "If Colonel Vance’s internal security patrols catch you—"

"They won't, sir, I locked the exterior bulkhead doors from the main control hub," Miller interrupted, pulling a suppressed Glock pistol and a Kevlar tactical vest from his duffel bag, handing them to David. "The whole base is in total chaos. Federal agents from the DOJ Inspector General's office raided the Pentagon data vaults forty minutes ago. The syndicate's firewall has been completely breached."

David strapped the Kevlar vest over his torn shirt, sliding the pistol into his waistband. "What about Noah? Did you track the transport unit?"

"They took him north toward the downtown rail yards," Miller said grimly, pulling a handheld tactical tablet from his pocket and tapping the screen. "Colonel Vance has a strike team monitoring him via a micro-camera embedded in the backpack they gave him. They expect him to deliver the drive at the midnight drop point under the old iron bridge."

David’s jaw tightened into a hard line of unyielding steel. "They think they're hunting a frightened child. They don't realize they've just armed the most dangerous sniper in this hemisphere."

"Sir, what's your play?" Miller asked, his eyes wide with nervous energy. "We're outgunned, outnumbered, and the entire military police battalion is under Colonel Vance's direct command."

David pulled the slide of the Glock back with a sharp, crisp snap, checking the chamber before letting it slide forward.

"We aren't fighting an army, Miller," David said, his voice dropping into a cold, terrifying whisper. "We're hunting traitors."
