Chapter 1 - The Shattered Family Project

The crystal chandeliers of the Vescari estate cast a blinding, diamond-like brilliance over the hundred-plus elite guests gathered for Luciano Vescari’s engagement reception. Veuve Clicquot champagne flowed freely, silver-plated trays of caviar gleamed under the spotlights, and a string quartet played a delicate melody from a raised balcony. It was the social event of the autumn season—an evening meant to celebrate Luciano’s union with Celina Ward, a woman from a prestigious political family who had spent the last year carefully cultivating her image as the soon-to-be matriarch of the Vescari empire.

At the edge of the grand ballroom, away from the glittering crowd, three-year-old Ellie Vescari clutched a small, worn pink backpack against her chest as if it were a shield. Her dark eyes, so like her father’s, watched the towering adults with quiet anxiety.

Celina Ward, draped in a custom ivory silk gown encrusted with pearls, spotted the little girl standing near the heavy velvet drapes. A flicker of cold irritation crossed her perfectly contoured face. To Celina, Ellie was not a child to be cherished; she was a living reminder of Luciano’s past, a permanent obstacle in her grand design to control the Vescari estate.

Without a word of warning, Celina crossed the polished marble floor, closed the distance between them, and snatched the backpack right out of the toddler’s hands.

“Mine!” Ellie protested, her small voice cracking with sudden panic as she reached upward. “Give it back, please!”

Before the little girl could take it back, Celina turned the backpack upside down and shook it violently.

Crayons, coloring papers, and school supplies spilled across the pristine marble floor in a chaotic mess.

Then Ellie’s handmade family project fell out. It was a clumsy construction-paper collage of construction paper, safety-scissor cutouts, and glitter glue—a child’s simple representation of her home, featuring three stick figures labeled Daddy, Ellie, and Mommy in our hearts.

Celina didn't hesitate. With deliberate cruelty, she planted the heel of her designer stiletto directly onto the center of Ellie’s project, grinding the paper beneath her shoe until the glitter glue smeared into the marble and the cardboard tore in half.

Tears welled instantly in Ellie’s eyes. Ignoring the scattered crayons, the little girl dropped to her hands and knees, crawling frantically across the floor toward Celina, clutching what remained of her mangled project to her chest.

“Daddy…” she sobbed, her voice trembling with a heartbreak no three-year-old should ever have to experience. “When do I have to leave?”

The question dropped into the bustling ballroom like a lead weight. The music sputtered. Conversations ground to a halt. Heads snapped around in unison, horrified by the public display of malice.

Luciano Vescari froze mid-sentence while speaking with a foreign trade minister. At thirty-four, Luciano was the absolute sovereign of the Vescari shipping and industrial conglomerate—a man whose cold, slate-gray eyes and razor-sharp intellect commanded absolute terror and respect across three continents.

Before Luciano could take a step toward his daughter, Marianne Vescari—Luciano’s formidable mother and the matriarch of the dynasty—stepped forward from the shadows of the arched doorway.

Behind her, half a dozen senior members of the household staff appeared, their faces grim and set with quiet fury.

They were carrying massive, tape-sealed cardboard boxes filled with Ellie’s clothes, toys, and blankets.

Marianne looked directly at Celina, her voice cutting through the stunned silence like a razor.

“She already emptied the child’s room.”
