Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

The penthouse lounge of the Saint Regis was virtually empty at nine o’clock at night. Soft jazz drifted from the ceiling speakers, masking the low hum of the rain beating against the panoramic windows overlooking the city skyline.
Daniel Vance sat in a leather armchair in the corner, a glass of twenty-year-old scotch resting on the marble table beside him. He looked up as Claire walked across the carpet.
He didn't see the two undercover detectives seated at the bar thirty feet away, nor did he see Maya Lin waiting by the elevator doors with a court stenographer and a federal warrant.
“You came to your senses,” Daniel said, a slow, arrogant smirk touching his lips as Claire sat down across from him. He adjusted his silk tie. “I told my mother you would. You don't have anywhere else to go, Claire. You don't have the money to fight us. You never did.”
Claire did not touch the menu. She folded her hands on the table, her gaze unwavering. “Where is your mother, Daniel?”
“She’s at the estate, preparing the paperwork for your admission to Oakridge,” Daniel said casually, taking a sip of his scotch. “If you cooperate, I can convince her to make it voluntary. You spend six months in the private retreat wing, get some rest, let them balance your medication. We drop the kidnapping charges. You can even see the kids on supervised weekends once you’re stable.”
“You’re poisoning me with phenobarbital, Daniel.”
Daniel’s hand froze mid-air. The amber liquid in his glass rippled slightly.
His smirk faltered, his eyes darting to Claire’s face, searching for a bluff. “I don't know what you’re talking about. That’s the paranoia talking again, Claire. See? You’re not well.”
Claire reached into her purse, pulled out a digital audio recorder, and set it on the marble table. She pressed play.
Daniel’s own voice echoed from the tiny speaker:
*“Claire noticed the bruising on Lily’s hip from last weekend… what if the preschool reports it?”*
Then Evelyn’s voice:
*“Slip the phenobarbital into her nighttime tea. Small doses… Judge Miller won't even require testimony. She will be remanded to the Oakridge Psychiatric Facility, and Lily will be placed in my exclusive custody.”*
Daniel turned the color of wet chalk. The scotch glass slipped from his fingers, spilling across the polished table, soaking into his linen napkins.
“Where… how did you get that?” he stammered, his breath catching in his throat.
“I have the entire hard drive from your office, Daniel,” Claire said in a calm, conversational tone. “Every single conversation between you and your mother for the past fourteen months. I have the files on Clara. I have the medical examiner's sealed report from the youth home. I have your forged signatures on the custody amendments.”
Daniel lunged across the table to grab the recorder, but Claire didn't flinch.
Before his fingers could touch the plastic casing, two men in dark suits materialized behind his chair. A heavy hand clamped onto Daniel’s shoulder, driving him back down into the leather seat.
“Daniel Vance?” the taller detective asked, flashing a gold badge. “I’m Detective Miller from the State Bureau of Investigation. We have an active warrant for your arrest on charges of felony conspiracy, child endangerment, tampering with evidence, and attempted aggravated assault with a toxic substance.”
“Wait! No!” Daniel scrambled backward, his chair scraping violently against the hardwood. “You don't understand! It wasn't me! It was my mother! She forced me! She threatened to cut me off!”
Patrons at nearby tables turned in shock as the detectives twisted Daniel’s arms behind his back, clicking the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
“You have the right to remain silent,” the detective recited, pulling Daniel to his feet.
Daniel turned his wild, sweating face toward Claire. “Claire, please! Tell them! We can fix this! Lily needs her father! I was trying to protect her from my mother! You know how Evelyn is!”
Claire stood up slowly. She walked over until she was inches away from the man she had loved for five years, the man who had sat on the couch while their daughter was beaten across the face.
“Lily doesn't have a father,” Claire whispered into his ear. “She only has an obstacle. And tonight, I cleared it.”
As Daniel was dragged through the gilded lobby of the hotel, kicking and screaming like a petulant child, Maya stepped out of the shadows.
“The raid on the Vance estate just started,” Maya said, checking her phone. “The State Police and Child Protective Services are executing the search warrant on Evelyn’s house right now.”
Claire turned toward the glass window. The rain had stopped, and the clouds were beginning to part over the city, revealing the cold, brilliant light of the moon.

“Let’s go,” Claire said. “I want to be there when she falls.”
