Chapter 4 - The Takedown of Apex Logistics

By 2:15 a.m., the surgical pavilion on the twelfth floor of New York Presbyterian Hospital was under total military lockdown.
Dr. Robert Sterling had completed the three-hour minimally invasive pulmonary resection, reporting that the tumor had been removed with clean margins and that Clara’s oxygen saturation had stabilized to ninety-nine percent.
She lay asleep in the presidential recovery suite, with eight-year-old Lily sleeping peacefully in an adjoining bed, holding her mother’s hand through the rail.
In the subterranean operations bunker beneath the Moretti Maritime Tower in downtown Manhattan, Dominic Moretti sat at a forty-foot conference table reviewing decrypted satellite servers.
Arthur Ross—seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling International Legal, the supreme corporate litigator who had represented the Moretti family for four decades—sat across the table, surrounded by twenty red-tabbed banker's boxes containing unsealed corporate charters and Grand Cayman banking ledgers.
"Let’s review the liquidation timeline, Arthur," Dominic commanded, his voice cold and razor-sharp.
Arthur Ross tapped his wireless stylus, illuminating the wall-mounted projection screen:
TARGET ENTITY: APEX SOVEREIGN LOGISTICS LLC (ZURICH/GRAND CAYMAN)
MANAGING FIDUCIARY: JULIAN MORETTI (40% CONTROLLING PREFERRED SHARES)
SILENT BROKER: JULIANNA STERLING (60% MEZZANINE DEBT UNDERWRITING)
STOLEN VANCE MARITIME EQUITY: $140,000,000.00 (DEEPWATER BERTHS 1 THROUGH 6).
"Here is the architecture of the conspiracy, Dominic," Arthur Ross explained, tracing the digital flow lines across the screen. "Eight years ago, Julian Moretti partnered with Julianna Sterling—the daughter of the late maritime magnate Harold Sterling—to force Clara Vance into exile."
"Why did they need Clara out of the state?" Dominic asked.
"Because under Section Twelve of the Thomas Vance Testamentary Trust," Arthur revealed, "Clara Vance held fifty percent of the voting common stock in the deepwater container berths at Newark. If you married Clara, your combined marital equity would have permanently blocked Julian from selling the harbor to the Zurich private equity syndicate."
David Sterling stepped forward, sliding an unsealed, gold-embossed document across the table.
"Julian planned to finalize the forced probate auction of Clara's harbor shares at noon tomorrow during the annual Northeast Maritime Leadership Assembly at the Metropolitan Club," David said. "He filed a fraudulent death certificate in Delaware claiming Clara Vance had expired without heirs in an indigent care facility."
Dominic looked down at his father’s restored gold signet watch on his wrist.
"Arthur," Dominic spoke into the quiet room.

"Yes, Dominic?"
"Unseal the grand jury indictments returned ninety minutes ago by the Southern District of New York. Freeze every commercial line of credit tied to Apex Logistics across thirty-two ports. And notify the board that the true owners of the Vance-Moretti trust will be presiding over the assembly in person."
