Chapter 5 - The Signing at the Firm

At precisely 9:28 AM, the heavy oak doors of Marcus’s private conference room swung open.

Julian Vance walked in, looking like a man who had aged ten years overnight. His Brioni suit was rumpled, his hair was uncombed, and dark, exhausted shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes. Behind him trailed a nervous corporate attorney who looked like he desperately wanted to be anywhere else on planet Earth.

Elena was not with them. She had apparently realized that Julian’s sinking ship was not going to offer her any shelter.

Marcus sat at the head of the conference table, flanked by Brenda and two senior partners from his firm who served as independent witnesses.

"You're a monster, Marcus," Julian hissed, walking unsteadily toward the table and tossing a leather briefcase onto the glass surface. "You're destroying everything I’ve built over a personal grudge."

"I’m protecting my daughter and my estate from a pair of professional parasites," Marcus corrected smoothly, sliding a twenty-page legal document across the glass toward Julian’s trembling hands. "Page eighteen, paragraph four. Sign on the dotted line, initial the asset transfer schedule, and initial the restraining order."

Julian’s attorney quickly flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon. He swallowed hard, looked up at Julian, and gave a faint, imperceptible nod. There was no legal loophole; the evidence Marcus had compiled was an absolute fortress.

With a shaking hand, Julian picked up a heavy Montblanc pen, scrawled his signature across the bottom of the document, and slammed the pen down onto the glass.

"It's done," Julian spat, turning toward the door. "I hope you rot in your empty house, Marcus."

"My house isn't empty, Julian," Marcus replied, calmly collecting the signed papers and sliding them into a pristine manila folder. "It has a very brave little girl living in it who just saved her father from a den of snakes. Enjoy federal bankruptcy court."

Without another word, Julian fled the conference room, dragging his terrified attorney in his wake.
