Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light
One year after the rainy evening twelve-year-old Jack broke the freezer lock in the closed kitchen, the dining room of Miller Family Hearth & Bakery was decorated with strings of golden fairy lights and lush arrangements of fresh wildflowers for the restaurant's first anniversary celebration.
The sixty-seat dining room was packed with fifty close friends, loyal kitchen staff, Detective Raymond Vance and his family, Marcus Reed, and the local first responders who had answered Jack's emergency call.
A massive, homemade four-tier strawberry shortcake sat in the center of the main display table, surrounded by platters of freshly baked artisan bread, roasted farm vegetables, and chilled sparkling cider.
Lucy stood at the head of the table in a beautiful emerald silk dress, her cheeks flushed with vibrant happiness as she raised her glass to the room.
Beside her stood Mark in a crisp linen shirt, and thirteen-year-old Jack, whose broad, confident smile reflected the pride of a young man who had saved his family.
Detective Raymond Vance tapped his glass with a silver fork, silencing the warm conversations.
"One year ago, this town saw the worst kind of greed walk through our streets," Detective Vance addressed the room, his deep voice carrying clear and steady. "And then we saw the greatest kind of courage. We saw a twelve-year-old boy who refused to believe a lie, a father who stood by his family, and a mother whose spirit could never be frozen in the dark. To the Miller family—the true heart of this town!"
"To the Millers!" the entire room chorused, raising their glasses in a thunderous, joyful toast that echoed out into the warm summer night.
Jack grinned, wrapping his arms around both of his parents, pulling them into a tight, loving embrace.
