Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Commission

At 10:00 a.m. on Friday, the grand executive boardroom on the sixtieth floor of the Russo Maritime Tower overlooking the Chicago River was convened for an emergency plenary assembly of the Five Families Commission.
The forty-two senior caporegimes, commercial shipping magnates, and municipal union delegates sat around the eighty-foot mahogany conference table in dead, suffocating silence.
The morning front-page headlines of The Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal lay spread across the polished table, every banner dominated by the same earth-shattering revelation:
STERLING LOGISTICS SYNDICATE CRUSHED IN $90M FEDERAL RAID: RUSSO DYNASTY UNIFIES CALUMET HARBOR UNDER SOVEREIGN VANCE TRUST.
When the double frosted-glass doors swung open, every single man in the room stood up in unison.
Dominic Russo walked into the boardroom, dressed in an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his posture radiating total, uncontested dominance.
Walking beside him, holding his arm with quiet, regal sovereignty, was Claire Vance-Russo.
I did not wear the muted gray dresses of an obedient hostage. I wore an exquisite, custom-tailored scarlet wool three-piece suit, my hair swept back in a severe, elegant chignon, wearing my mother’s restored gold-and-sapphire signet compass around my neck.
On my left ring finger gleamed the heavy platinum wedding band, restored to its rightful place.
Following behind us were Arthur Ross, Marco, and Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, carrying four heavy aluminum Pelican cases containing the unsealed Delaware forensic ledgers.
Dominic walked to the head of the table. He pulled out the master executive armchair, gently seating me at the center of the board, before taking his place standing firmly at my right hand.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Dominic began, his deep baritone cutting through the suffocating tension like a drawn razor. "Item one on today's agenda is the formal, permanent termination of all commercial contracts, logistics leases, and maritime concessions previously held by the Sterling syndicate and their allied captains."
The directors nodded in rapid, unanimous agreement, every single man signing the emergency restructuring resolutions without a single objection.
"Item two," Dominic continued, looking around the table with cold, penetrating clarity. "The ninety million dollars recovered from the Sterling offshore accounts has been fully transferred into the newly established Evelyn Vance Foundation for Port Safety and Whistleblower Protection."
The room erupted into spontaneous, standing applause.
"And item three," Dominic added, turning his gaze toward me with boundless, unshakeable devotion. "Claire Vance-Russo is hereby confirmed as Supreme Fiduciary Trustee and Co-Chairwoman of the unified Russo-Vance Maritime Consortium, with absolute veto authority over all commercial and strategic operations."

The entire boardroom rose to its feet, their cheers echoing through the high-vaulted glass atrium, sealing the dawn of an unshakeable, unified empire built on honor, loyalty, and truth.
I closed the master leather ledger with a sharp, definitive thud. "The meeting is adjourned. Let's get our ports back to work."
