Chapter 5 - The Forensic Strike

Arthur stepped forward, setting his leather case on the granite surface. He didn't connect his tablet to the room's Wi-Fi network; he plugged an encrypted hardline directly into the boardroom's central projection console.
The sixty-foot smart-glass wall behind the table flickered, the panoramic view of the rainy Chicago skyline replaced by an avalanche of financial ledgers, offshore banking routing codes, and timestamped audio waveforms.
"At four-fifteen this afternoon," Arthur announced, his voice clinical and completely devoid of emotion, "an anonymous wire transfer of fourteen million dollars cleared an escrow account at Banque Cantonale de Genève. The beneficiary was a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Aegean Holdings."
Arthur tapped the screen. A document expanded, displaying the incorporation certificate of the shell company.
The sole beneficial owner was Richard Vance.
"The originating account," Arthur continued, glancing at the pale, sweating executives around the table, "belonged to the Sterling Logistics consortium—the same entity that holds the maintenance and security contracts for Terminal 3 at O'Hare. It appears Mr. Richard Vance was promising to grant Sterling an exclusive, twenty-year municipal ground-handling monopoly in exchange for their support in today's proxy vote."
Richard sprang to his feet, his chair screeching against the floor. "This is an internal corporate audit! You can't introduce unverified foreign bank records into a closed board proceeding! It violates every rule of governance!"
"The rules of governance," Eleanor said, her voice freezing the air in the room, "were written by me, Richard. And I am invoking Article 9: Emergency Executive Dissolution."
The three senior board members sitting nearest to Richard visibly recoiled.
"Article 9?" an elderly director with white hair stammered, his hands shaking as he adjusted his spectacles. "Eleanor... you can't be serious. That dissolves the entire executive committee! It suspends all voting equity!"
"It suspends all voting equity held by members complicit in corporate espionage and treason," Eleanor corrected. "Which, according to the server logs Arthur pulled from the Rockford maintenance facility forty minutes ago, includes you, Marcus, along with Davis and Henderson's uncle at Sterling."
The door to the boardroom clicked open again.
This time, it wasn't private security operatives who entered.
Four special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wearing dark blue windbreakers over business suits, stepped into the room. The lead agent, a woman with sharp features and a badge clipped to her belt, looked directly at Richard Vance.
"Richard Vance?" the agent said. "I am Special Agent Miller, United States Department of Justice. We have a federal arrest warrant for wire fraud, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the downing of Vance Aviation tail number November-Eight-Eight-Victor."
Richard stared at the federal agents. The arrogance, the polish, the thousand-dollar suit—it all seemed to shrivel away, leaving behind a terrified, cornered boy. He looked down the length of the granite table, searching for an ally, an old friend, a mentor.
Not a single person looked back.
The agents stepped forward, clicking a pair of stainless-steel handcuffs off their utility belts. Within thirty seconds, Richard Vance was secured, his arms pinned behind his back, his head forced down as he was marched out through the walnut double doors into the elevator lobby.
The silence that followed was absolute.

Eleanor Vance stood at the head of the table, her hand resting on Emily’s shoulder, feeling the young girl’s heart hammering beneath the nylon smock.
"Now," Eleanor said, turning her slate-gray eyes back to the remaining nine board members who were practically hyperventilating in their leather chairs. "Let us discuss the restructuring of the Vance Foundation."
