Chapter 4 - The Morning Summons

At 7:30 AM on Wednesday, the phone beside Emily’s cot began to buzz with a harsh, insistent vibration.

Emily groaned, rubbing her tired eyes. She had barely slept two hours, her brain cycling through endless scenarios of job applications, eviction notices, and freezing sidewalks. She reached out, snatched her cracked smartphone off the nightstand, and hit accept.

"Hello?" she rasped, her voice thick with morning sleep.

"Is this Miss Emily Carter?" a crisp, professional voice asked on the other end.

"Yes... this is me."

"Miss Carter, my name is Arthur Sterling. I am the chairman and primary shareholder of the Sterling Grand Hotel."

Emily’s eyes flew wide open. She sat straight up in bed, the blanket falling away from her shoulders. "Mr... Mr. Sterling? Look, if this is about last night, I'm sorry for yelling at Mr. Vance, but I won't apologize for—"

"Miss Carter, please do not apologize for anything," Arthur interrupted, his voice instantly softening, carrying that warm, resonant depth she had heard in the lobby the night before. "I am calling to invite you to my private executive office at the Sterling Grand. A town car is currently idling outside your apartment building on Astoria Boulevard. The driver is holding an umbrella with a blue ribbon."

"A town car?" Emily blinked, staring at the peeling wallpaper of her bedroom. "Mr. Sterling, I don't understand—"

"You will understand everything in twenty minutes, my dear," Arthur said gently. "Please, get dressed. Wear something warm, but comfortable. We have a rather important restructuring to attend to."

Click.

The line went dead.

Ten minutes later, still in a daze, Emily pulled on her warmest wool coat, tied her hair back, and opened her apartment door. Sure enough, parked directly beneath the skeletal branches of a barren oak tree was a sleek, long-wheelbase black Mercedes-Maybach, its engine purring softly against the morning frost. A tall chauffeur in a charcoal overcoat stood beside the rear door, holding a royal-blue silk umbrella over the empty pavement.

The chauffeur saw her, stepped forward, and tipped his cap. "Miss Carter? Welcome. Please, get inside."

The ride across the Triborough Bridge into Manhattan was silent, smooth, and surreal. The gray towers of the city loomed through the morning mist, glowing with the pale, fragile promise of a new day.

When the Maybach pulled into the private subterranean loading bay of the Sterling Grand, an elevator door was already open, waiting for her.

The private lift carried her sixty floors upward in absolute silence, bypassing the lobby, the guest suites, and the executive conference rooms, until it pinged softly and opened directly into the penthouse library.

It was a breathtaking sanctuary of dark walnut bookshelves, Persian carpets, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offered a panoramic view of Central Park blanketed in frost.

Standing by the window, leaning on his ebony cane, was Arthur Sterling. He wore an immaculate charcoal suit of Savile Row wool, his silver hair neatly combed, looking less like a freezing vagrant and more like the industrial titan he truly was.

As Emily stepped out of the elevator, Arthur turned around. A warm, radiant smile broke across his weathered face.

"Welcome, Emily," Arthur said, spreading his arms slightly. "Thank you for coming."
