Chapter 4 - The Ledger of the Fall

Dominic opened the leather notebook under the desk lamp.

The pages were filled with hand-written ledger entries, encrypted bank routing numbers, and dates stretching back fourteen months:

OPERATION: SLEEPING KING // PROTOCOL: PERMANENT DECOMMISSIONING

PRIMARY ASSET ALLOCATION: NEWARK DEEPWATER BERTHS 1 THROUGH 6 ($120M VALUATION)

ESCROW AGENT: CAYMAN COMMERCIAL PRIVATE TRUST // ACCOUNT #9941-R

PAYMENT DISBURSEMENTS:

- $250,000.00: TO APEX LOGISTICS SECURITY CONSULTANTS (VEHICULAR ARMOR MODIFICATION)

- $150,000.00: TO DR. GREGORY VANCE (NEUROLOGICAL INTERFERENCE & CERTIFICATION)

- $500,000.00: TO ISABELLA MARCONE (MARITAL SEVERANCE & SILENCE AGREEMENT)

Dominic’s breath hitched in his throat.

His fingers dug into the aged paper until the fibers groaned.

Isabella Marcone.

His fiancée. The woman who had sworn she loved him for who he was, who had cried at his bedside in the intensive care unit, who had returned the ring on a rainy Tuesday without a single word.

She hadn't left him because he was paralyzed.

She had been paid half a million dollars from an offshore Cayman account to walk away, ensuring that his psychological isolation was complete, driving him toward signing the receivership proxies out of pure, unadulterated despair.

And the armor modification on his SUV.

The "statistically improbable" angle where the bullet entered the cabin.

Dominic swiped his thumb across the entry dated August 14:

MECHANICAL VULNERABILITY: B-PILLAR SEAM REINFORCEMENT REMOVED DURING ROUTINE FLEET MAINTENANCE AT MORETTI HARBOR SERVICE FACILITY.

The garage run by Ricardo Moretti’s oldest son, Vincent.

The ambush in the Manhattan parking garage had not been an attack by the Lucchesi family or a rival syndicate from Brooklyn.

It was an inside execution planned by his own uncle, executed by his cousins, and certified by corrupt medical mercenaries.

"Clara," Dominic spoke into the quiet room.

His voice was terrifyingly calm. The hollow despair that had weighed down his chest for eighty days was gone, replaced by a cold, white-hot fury that burned like liquid oxygen through his veins.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Can you rebuild the nerve conduction?"

Clara stepped closer, looking down at his legs with the fierce, unshakeable confidence of a trauma nurse who had pulled soldiers out of the dark.

"The spinal cord was never severed, Dominic," Clara said, using his first name for the first time without flinching. "The MRI Dr. Vance showed you was from a different patient. Your L1 vertebra had a minor fracture that has already healed. The reason you cannot move your toes is because Dr. Vance has been injecting Botulinum-Toxin Type B into your paraspinal muscle beds during your morning therapeutic massages."

Dominic’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked violently beneath his beard. "The morning injections."

"He told you they were vitamin B-complex and anti-spasmodic peptides," Clara revealed. "It paralyzes the neuromuscular junction for twenty-one days at a time. The last injection was Tuesday morning. In seven days, the toxin will metabolize out of your system."

She reached down, taking both of his scarred hands into hers.

"If you trust me, Dominic," Clara whispered, "I will have you walking across this floor before the Commission convenes on Friday."
