Chapter 7 - The Quiet Aftermath

By two o'clock in the morning, the estate had grown profoundly quiet.

The police had finished their initial sweep, taking statements, securing the digital logs, and bagging the platinum ring as primary evidence before placing it in safe custody to be returned to its rightful owner. The guests had all departed, their luxury cars disappearing down the long, winding gravel driveway one by one like retreating ghosts.

I sat alone in my private study on the second floor, a glass of un-iced scotch sitting untouched on the mahogany desk in front of me.

The rain had slowed to a steady, rhythmic drizzle outside the window.

A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door.

"Come in," I said.

Marco pushed the door open, stepping into the room with his usual measured tread. Behind him stood little Rosie, still wearing her cloud-patterned pajamas, holding her stuffed rabbit in one hand while rubbing her heavy, sleepy eyes with the other.

"She wouldn't go to sleep in the guest wing, Mr. Vance," Marco said quietly, a rare hint of softness in his gravelly voice. "She kept asking for her mommy... and then she asked if she could check on you."

I stood up immediately, walking around the desk and kneeling down in front of the little girl.

Rosie looked up at me, her dark eyes filled with an innocent, heartbreaking confusion that made my chest ache.

"Mister Damian?" she whispered softly. "Is Mommy coming back now?"

I swallowed the hard lump forming in my throat, reaching out to gently brush a stray strand of hair away from her forehead.

"No, sweet girl," I said, keeping my voice as steady as possible. "Mommy isn't coming back. But... she left something very important behind. And we are going to make sure nobody ever takes it away from her again."

Rosie blinked slowly, processing the words with the profound simplicity of a child. Then, without warning, she stepped forward and wrapped her small arms tightly around my neck, burying her face against my shoulder.

I froze for a second, unaccustomed to such unconditional warmth, before slowly wrapping my arms around her small frame and holding her close against the cold night air.
