Chapter 5 - The Descent from the Penthouse

The moment the word Jane left Margaret’s lips, the heavy, oppressive air in the First Meridian Trust lobby seemed to undergo a sudden, molecular transformation.

Richard Vance, who had been sneering as he watched Ethan pack his meager belongings into a brown paper folder, paused. Something in the old woman’s posture—the absolute lack of tremor in the hand holding the titanium phone, the unblinking stillness of her gaze—sent an instinctive, primal jolt of unease through Vance’s corporate-conditioned nervous system.

"Who do you think you're calling, old woman?" Vance barked, attempting to mask his sudden internal panic with a louder, sharper tone. "I told you, security is already escorting you out. If you don't drop that phone right now, I'll personally—"

Margaret didn't even look at him. She lowered the phone, slipping the expensive titanium device back into the torn lining of her ragged coat as if it were an everyday occurrence. Then, she turned her attention back to Ethan, who was standing beside the counter with his jaw slack.

"Thank you, Ethan," Margaret said, her voice softening back into a warm, grandmotherly tone. "You showed integrity when everyone else showed cowardice. That is a rare commodity in this building."

Before Ethan could reply, the private elevator bank at the rear of the lobby—the ultra-exclusive lift reserved exclusively for the chairman, executive directors, and board members—pinged with a bright, cheerful chime.

It wasn't the public elevators. It was the private mahogany-paneled lift that required a cryptographic keycard and biometric retina scan.

The polished brass doors slid open smoothly with a soft, pneumatic hiss.

Stepping out of the elevator wasn't a building security guard. It was a woman in her late forties, dressed in an impeccably tailored navy Chanel suit, wearing pearl earrings and carrying a heavy leather briefcase. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with a mixture of absolute terror and frantic urgency.

It was Katherine Vance-Sterling—Chief Executive Officer of First Meridian Trust and managing director of the entire parent corporation. Katherine rarely left the executive penthouse on the sixtieth floor, and she certainly never came down to the public lobby unsummoned.

Vance’s face lit up with a nervous, obsequious smile as he hurried across the marble floor toward the elevator.

"Ms. Vance-Sterling! Oh, thank goodness," Vance babbled, lowering his voice into a sycophantic register. "I'm so sorry you had to come down here yourself. We had a major security breach—this deranged old woman wandered in off the street, refusing to leave, and this insubordinate clerk, Cole, tried to help her—"

Katherine Vance-Sterling did not look at Richard Vance.

She walked right past him—literally brushing shoulders with the stunned manager—as if Vance were nothing more than a coat rack.

Katherine’s eyes were locked entirely on the elderly woman standing by the customer service counter.

The CEO stopped three paces away. She dropped her heavy leather briefcase to the floor with a dull thud, stood at rigid attention, and bowed deeply from the waist—a gesture so formal, so profound, that it looked entirely unnatural in a modern corporate bank.

"Mother," Katherine said, her voice trembling slightly. "We... we didn't receive your itinerary. The car was scheduled for four o'clock."
