Chapter 6 - The Cleansing of Beacon Hill

Over the next three weeks, the grand Vance estate in Boston underwent a complete and permanent transformation.

I took an indefinite leave of absence from the executive chairmanship of Vance Global, delegating daily operations to Harrison Reed and an independent board of ethical maritime trustees.

I ordered the immediate sale of my father’s predatory real estate holdings, redirecting forty million dollars into The Claire & Eleanor Pediatric Foundation—a charitable trust dedicated to providing free fertility treatments, prenatal care, and legal aid for single mothers across the Pacific Northwest.

My mother, Eleanor, was discharged from Virginia Mason and moved into a beautiful single-story waterfront cottage on Bainbridge Island, surrounded by fragrant cedar trees, blooming lavender gardens, and the clean sea breeze of Puget Sound.

Every afternoon, Claire and I would bring Noah and Liam across the ferry to visit her.

The boys loved running across the wide wooden deck, laughing as they fed pieces of sourdough bread to the white gulls while Eleanor sat in her sunlit rocking chair, her cheeks glowing with radiant health and a peace she had not known in forty years.

One sunny Saturday afternoon in June, Claire and I sat on the cedar bench near the water, watching our sons build a driftwood fort on the rocky beach with their grandmother.

The afternoon sun cast long, sparkling ripples of amber and sapphire across the sound.

Claire set her mug of tea down on the stone balustrade, turning to look at me with a soft, radiant smile.

"What are you thinking about, Julian?" Claire asked softly.

I reached out, taking her hand in mine, feeling the warmth of her skin, my fingers gently tracing the delicate silver ring on her finger.

"I was thinking about the night I signed those divorce papers in Boston," I murmured, my voice thick with deep, enduring reverence. "How I thought I was letting you go to save you from my family... and how blind I was to the strength you carried."

Claire leaned in, resting her head gently against my shoulder, her fingers intertwining with mine.

"We were both trapped in his cage, Julian," Claire whispered softly. "He made us believe that love had to be earned through transactions. But look at our boys. They didn't need an empire. They just needed us."
