Chapter 2 - The Executive Lift

Richard Vance stood before the polished brass doors of the private executive elevator, tapping his foot impatiently against the marble floor. His adrenaline was still pumping from the public humiliation he had just inflicted upon the janitor. He felt invincible. Tomorrow was the board vote, the tech acquisition was locked down, and he had just reminded everyone on the forty-fifth floor precisely who held the whip.

"Did you see the look on his face?" Richard muttered to the junior analyst standing nervously to his left, a young man named David whose tie was slightly crooked. "That's how you manage people. Total dominance. You give an inch, and they take a mile."

"Yes, Mr. Vance. Absolutely brilliant, sir," David stammered, offering a tight, unconvincing smile while secretly wishing the floor would open up and swallow him whole. David had actually spoken to Arthur twice in the breakroom; the old man had quietly shared his thermos of black coffee with David during a brutal twenty-hour audit crunch three weeks ago. David had a sinking, sickening feeling in his gut that Richard had just made the worst mistake of his life, though he dared not utter a single word of warning.

Behind them down the hallway, the soft squeak of rubber cart wheels grew closer.

Richard didn't even turn around. He assumed the janitor was retreating to the service stairs as ordered. "Still here, old man?" Richard called out mockingly, not bothering to look back. "I thought I told you to take your bucket to the basement."

Arthur didn't answer. He pushed his cart past the cluster of analysts, stopping just five feet away from the private elevator doors.

Richard turned his head, his lip curling in utter disgust. "Are you deaf? Or are you just begging to be fired tonight? Security!"

Before Richard could press the call button for the second time, a soft, pleasant chime echoed from the elevator shaft.

Ding.

The brass doors slid open smoothly with pneumatic precision.

Inside the private elevator was not a standard corporate car. It was paneled in dark Brazilian walnut, outfitted with polished brass handrails, and featured a digital floor indicator that only displayed one designation: P-1: THE PENTHOUSE / BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

Richard cleared his throat, adjusting his jacket, preparing to step inside the inner sanctum of corporate power.

"Excuse me," Richard said sharply, gesturing for Arthur to wheel his cart backward out of the way. "This lift is restricted. Employees of your... caliber... use the freight elevator at the rear of the building."

Arthur didn't move an inch. Instead, he reached into his shirt pocket, pulled out a heavy, platinum-plated keycard embedded with a glowing holographic chip, and slid it into the restricted key slot beside the elevator buttons.

Click-whir.

A green light flashed above the panel. The elevator doors, which were programmed to lock automatically upon opening for anyone without primary executive clearance, remained wide open.

Richard froze. His jaw dropped slightly. "How... how did you get a master clearance key? Did you steal that from a supervisor's desk?!"

Arthur ignored him completely. He pulled his mop cart right past Richard, stepping into the luxurious wood-paneled interior of the private lift. He turned around, resting his weathered hands on the handle of his cart, and looked out at Richard with an expression of calm, impenetrable serenity.

"Are you coming, Mr. Vance?" Arthur asked politely, his voice carrying a strange, quiet authority that made the hairs on the back of David’s arms stand up. "Or are you going to stand out there all night staring at my shoes?"

Richard’s face flushed red with a mixture of confusion and boiling rage. He was the Senior Vice President of M&A! How DARE this filthy janitor speak to him with such casual insolence?

"You are out of your mind," Richard snarled, lunging forward and grabbing the edge of the elevator door to stop it from closing. "Security! Code red on the forty-fifth floor! We have an unauthorized intruder operating the primary executive lift!"

No security guards appeared. The hallway remained dead silent, save for the hum of the ventilation system.

"I am locking you inside this car until building police get here," Richard hissed, pressing his hand against the emergency hold button.

"I wouldn't do that, Richard," a new voice echoed down the hallway.

Richard spun around. Striding out of the stairwell doors was Elena Rostova, the firm’s Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel. She was a woman in her late fifties with silver-streaked hair, wearing a sharp Chanel suit and carrying an expression of stony, ice-cold fury.

"Ms. Rostova!" Richard exclaimed, visibly relieved, rushing toward her. "Thank goodness! This lunatic janitor somehow bypassed security, stole a master keycard, and forced his way into the private executive lift! I'm having him arrested right now!"

Elena didn't look at Richard. She walked past him as if he were a ghost, her heels clicking rapidly against the marble floor. She stopped directly at the open doors of the private elevator, looked inside at the old man leaning on his mop cart, and lowered her head in a profound, formal bow.

"Good evening, Mr. Chairman," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly with what sounded like sheer, unadulterated terror. "The board is already assembled in the penthouse suite. We’ve been waiting for you."
