Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Foundation

The following Sunday morning, the dawn broke over Lake Michigan in brilliant ribbons of gold, rose, and amber, turning the vast expanse of water into a glittering, tranquil mirror.
Jake walked along the concrete promenade near the harbor, dressed in a simple wool sweater, dark trousers, and sturdy leather boots, carrying two paper cups of hot coffee from the local bakery.
Beside him walked Frank Dawson, wrapped in a warm camel-hair coat, his arm linked securely through Jake’s.
They walked in comfortable, peaceful silence, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves against the seawall and the distant cries of gulls wheeling in the morning air.
They stopped near the outer pier, looking out toward the shipping channels where a massive semi-truck bearing the silver falcon crest of the Dawson fleet was gliding smoothly out toward the open highway, bound for the Midwest.
"Do you ever miss sweeping the shop floor, Jake?" Frank asked softly, looking up at him with immense, maternal—paternal—pride.
Jake looked down at his mentor, taking a slow sip of his coffee, feeling the warm morning breeze brush against his face.
He thought of the cold rain on Route 45. He thought of his mother’s tired smile in the apartment. He thought of the thirty-four dollars on the fender, and the six words that had rewritten his destiny.

"I have the shop floor right here with me, Frank," Jake smiled, gently squeezing the old man’s arm. "When your foundation is built on truth and mercy, the noise of the world can never shake you."
They stood together on the edge of the great city, watching the golden sun rise higher into the cloudless sky, knowing with absolute, eternal certainty that the house they had built together would stand strong, shelter the fallen, and endure for generations to come.
