Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Built

The sun began its slow, majestic descent into the western hills, painting the Massachusetts sky in breathtaking ribbons of gold, violet, and deep crimson. The evening breeze blew gentle and cool across the valley, carrying the sweet scent of blooming lilacs and the distant, happy laughter of our daughter playing in the grass.

We sat together on the wide wooden back porch swing, swaying gently back and forth in the fading twilight.

Lily had finally worn herself out, fast asleep curled against Alec’s chest, her tiny thumb tucked safely in her mouth while Alec gently stroked her soft brown curls with one hand, his other arm wrapped securely around my shoulders.

I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting thud of his heartbeat, feeling an absolute, unbreakable sense of peace wash over my soul.

Across the lawn, past the white picket fence, the world was moving on. Julian Vance was sitting in a federal maximum-security cell hundreds of miles away, spending his days scrubbing floors and reflecting on a life destroyed by his own unmitigated greed. His mother had faded into obscurity, and his name was a cautionary tale whispered in Boston high-society circles—a reminder that no matter how high you build your throne of lies, gravity always wins in the end.

But out here, in the quiet warmth of our home, none of that mattered.

"Are you warm enough, Clara?" Alec asked softly, pressing a tender kiss to the top of my head.

May you like

"I'm more than warm, Alec," I replied, closing my eyes and taking a deep, uninhibited breath of the evening air. "I'm completely, perfectly home."

Alec smiled, tightening his embrace as the first brilliant stars of the evening began to pierce the twilight sky. The storm had passed. The wreckage had been cleared away. And the horizon stretching out before us was wide, open, and endlessly bright.
