Chapter 4 - Stripped Bare

By two in the afternoon, the rain had turned into a heavy, slushy sleet that coated the streets of Boston in grey misery.

The penthouse at 77 Commonwealth Avenue was not the only residence undergoing a transition. Three blocks away, at the prestigious Louisburg Square townhome where Eleanor Thorne had lived for forty years, two black moving vans were parked with their hazard lights blinking.

Eleanor was standing on the brick sidewalk, refusing to use an umbrella, her expensive woolen cape soaked through at the shoulders. Two uniformed deputy sheriffs stood by the front door, while three professional movers carried out antique mirrors, boxed silver, and oil paintings.

“This is private property!” Eleanor shrieked at the senior deputy, her voice raw from hours of screaming. “This house has been in the Thorne family since 1952! You cannot evict me! My lawyer is filing an emergency stay in Superior Court right now!”

The deputy, an older man with an impassive face, checked his clipboard. “Ma’am, the deed to this property has been held by the Whitaker Real Estate Trust since the restructuring in 2004. Your son defaulted on the maintenance covenant three months ago when he transferred the trust payments to an offshore account in the Bahamas. The court granted the writ of possession at eleven this morning. We’re just executing the order.”

“That was an administrative error!” she cried, clutching at the deputy’s sleeve. “A bank transfer delay! I have the money! I can write a check right now!”

“You can take that up with the trustee’s counsel, ma’am,” the deputy said, gently but firmly removing her hand from his arm. “For now, you need to step behind the yellow tape. The movers are cataloging the high-value personal effects. Anything not claimed by five p.m. will be moved to bonded storage at your expense.”

Across the square, a silver Bentley Continental pulled up to the curb. Grayson emerged from the driver’s side, looking wild-eyed and disheveled. He hadn't changed out of his suit from the morning, which was now rumpled and stained with coffee. Sloane stumbled out behind him, still wearing her evening heels, which kept catching in the wet gaps between the historic cobblestones.

“Mother!” Grayson yelled, rushing toward the steps. “What are they doing? Why are they taking the furniture?”

“They’re stealing everything!” Eleanor wailed, collapsing against her son’s chest. “They have court orders, Grayson! They’re taking your father’s portraits! They’re taking the silver!”

Grayson turned toward the lead deputy, his face contorted in rage. “I am Grayson Thorne! You stop this right now, or I will have your badge by sundown!”

The deputy didn't even blink. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a laminated document, and handed it to Grayson.

“Mr. Thorne, this is an order of asset attachment signed by Judge Vance forty minutes ago. It applies to all secondary vehicles registered to the Thorne corporate fleet, including that 2023 Bentley you just parked in a loading zone.”

Grayson froze, the paper trembling in his hand. “The car?”

A heavy flatbed tow truck rounded the corner of Louisburg Square, its hydraulic lift hissing in the cold air.

Sloane let out a high, terrified squeak. “Grayson! My bags are in the trunk! My Birkin is in that car!”

“Shut up, Sloane!” Grayson roared, spinning on her with his hands clenched into fists. “Shut your goddamned mouth about your bags!”

Sloane stepped back, shocked, her face turning pale. “Don't you speak to me like that! You told me you had eighty million dollars in personal trusts! You told me we were getting the Martha’s Vineyard estate! You told me she was a nobody!”

“She took it!” Grayson screamed, his voice echoing off the historic brick facades, drawing the curtains back in half a dozen neighboring mansions where Boston’s oldest families watched the spectacle in horrified delight. “She took the trusts! She took the accounts! She took the harbor! She took everything, you stupid, greedy parasite!”

“I am a parasite?” Sloane shrieked back, her aristocratic veneer completely vanishing into pure, gutter venom. “You used me! You paraded me around town to make yourself look like an alpha male because you were terrified of your quiet little wife! You’re not a titan, Grayson! You’re a fraud! You’re an unemployed, bankrupt fraud living on mommy’s dead husband’s credit!”

“Get out!” Grayson lunged toward her, but the deputy sheriff stepped between them with a heavy, warning hand on his utility belt.

“That’s enough, folks,” the deputy said sternly. “Move it along. Take your personal belongings out of the Bentley now, Mr. Thorne, or they’ll be cataloged as impound inventory.”

Eleanor sank onto the wet stone steps of her former home, her knees giving out completely. Her wet coat dragged in the slush. The woman who had spent four decades dictating which debutantes were worthy of entering Boston society was now sitting on the curb like an evicted tenant in a tenement district.

“Julian Cross,” Eleanor whispered, her teeth chattering. “Call Julian. He will listen to me. His father was our neighbor in Brookline. He has to give us an audience.”

Grayson stared down at his mother, his eyes dead and hollow. “Julian isn't taking our calls, Mother. Nobody is. I tried to use my black card at the diner on Cambridge Street to get a cup of coffee. It was declined. The bank teller told me my personal accounts are frozen pending the grand jury inquiry into the maritime subcontracts.”

“Grand jury?” Eleanor’s head snapped up, her face white with horror. “What grand jury?”

“The documents Isla gave the board,” Grayson said, his voice dropping into a flat, terrifying monotone. “She didn't just fire me, Mother. She handed seven years of my private tax records to the Department of Justice. Every consulting payment I routed through Sloane’s shell company. Every inflated expense invoice I used to fund our lifestyle while Thorne Global was operating at a loss.”

Grayson looked down at his shoes, watching the dirty slush pool around his toes.

“She isn't just taking our money, Mother. She’s sending me to federal prison.”
