Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Trap

The grand ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel sparkled with diamonds, champagne flutes, and ruthless ambition.
It was the annual St. Jude’s Society Winter Gala—the crown jewel of Boston’s social calendar, where politicians rubbed elbows with real estate moguls and the heads of the city's five ruling crime syndicates observed an uneasy, heavily armed truce.
Dominic Vale had chosen this night to strike.
“Are you sure about this?” Catherine whispered as the elevator rose toward the penthouse ballroom.
She stood beside Dominic, wearing a custom emerald-green silk gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline that displayed the smooth expanse of her skin. The heavy fabric draped elegantly over her hips and gathered at her waist with a diamond clasp. She wore no excessive jewelry—only a pair of emerald drop earrings Dominic had placed on her vanity that afternoon.
Dominic, immaculate in a black tuxedo that concealed the Kevlar vest beneath his shirt, turned to her. His eyes traveled slowly down the curve of her body, his gaze possessing a hunger that made her skin tingle beneath the silk.
“You look like an empress,” Dominic said quietly. “Every man in that room will envy me, and every woman will despise you for making them look like paper dolls.”
“Dominic, this isn't a date. It’s an ambush.”
“It’s both,” he murmured, offering his arm. “Keep Marlow close. Watch his eyes when I mention the Vanguard accounts. Nico is stationed on the service floor with a team. Once Marlow signals his Cavanaugh contacts, we close the net.”
The elevator doors opened.
The roar of classical music and low laughter filled the air. Dominic and Catherine stepped into the ballroom, and the effect was instantaneous.
Conversations withered. Heads turned.
Elena Vance, a socialite heiress who had pursued Dominic for three seasons, choked on her champagne. Whispers rippled across the polished parquet floor like wildfire:
*“Is that the waitress from Bellaforte?”*
*“Good heavens, look at the size of her...”*
*“Dominic Vale brought a common nurse to the winter gala?”*
Catherine felt the weight of a hundred hostile stares. But this time, she didn't have a silver tray in her hands. She had Dominic Vale at her side, his arm solid as granite beneath her fingers.
She lifted her chin, meeting the venomous stares with a cool, serene smile that radiated absolute authority. She didn't shrink; she expanded, filling the room with her presence, vibrant and undeniable.
“Miss Gallagher,” Vincent Marlow appeared at their side, his silver hair neatly styled, his smile pleasant and dead behind his eyes. “A surprising addition to tonight’s proceedings. You clean up remarkably well for someone accustomed to clearing dirty plates.”
Catherine turned to him, her smile razor-sharp. “And you speak remarkably well, Mr. Marlow, for a man whose shell companies are currently being audited by the Port Authority.”
Marlow’s smile froze. A tiny, almost imperceptible twitch occurred at the corner of his left eye.
Dominic stepped closer, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying murmur. “Vanguard Logistics, Vincent. Did you really think four million dollars in fuel surcharges wouldn't leave a paper trail? Miss Gallagher spotted your sloppy math in five minutes.”
Marlow’s mask slipped. A dark, ugly sneer twisted his refined features. “You’ve grown soft, Dominic. Listening to a fat, common whore while the Cavanaughs are ready to take every dock from here to Portland.”
Dominic’s hand moved faster than thought.
He didn't draw a gun; he simply grabbed Marlow by the throat, his fingers digging into the older man's carotid artery with crushing force, backing him toward the glass doors leading out to the private harbor terrace. The socialites nearby scattered, gasping in horror.
“I built this city,” Dominic hissed, his face inches from Marlow’s. “And I will feed you to the harbor before this night is over.”
“Look out!” Catherine screamed.
From the darkened balcony outside, a laser sight cut through the glass, painting a trembling red dot on Dominic’s chest.
Catherine didn't calculate the odds. She lunged forward, throwing her full weight into Dominic, driving him out of the line of fire just as a high-velocity rifle round shattered the heavy glass door.
The sound was like an explosion. Shards of safety glass rained over them like diamond dust. The ballroom erupted into hysterical shrieks as patrons hit the floor.
Dominic rolled, pulling Catherine beneath him to shield her from the flying debris.
“Catherine!” he yelled, checking her face, his hands trembling.
A sharp gasp escaped her. A piece of jagged glass had sliced deep across her upper arm, soaking the emerald silk in dark, hot blood.
Dominic looked at her blood.
Something snapped inside him. The calculating, disciplined crime lord vanished, replaced by an ancient, apocalyptic beast.
“Nico!” Dominic roared into his lapel communicator, his voice shaking the chandeliers. *“Kill everyone on the terrace. Leave no one breathing!”*
He scooped Catherine up into his arms, carrying her through the screaming crowd toward the private service exit, completely indifferent to the chaos around him. His eyes burned with an unhinged, terrifying madness.

“Hold on to me, sweetheart,” he whispered, his voice cracking with panic. “Stay with me. Don't you dare close your eyes.”
