Chapter 3 - The Boardroom on 5th Avenue

The executive boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Whitmore Tower on 5th Avenue was wrapped in panoramic glass facades that looked out over Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.

Around the forty-foot obsidian conference table sat the twelve senior directors of Whitmore Group: corporate litigators, venture bankers, terminal operating chiefs, and the independent audit committee.

At 7:55 AM, Brandon strode into the boardroom, flanked by Vanessa Cole and his personal counsel, Marcus Bell. Brandon had recovered his arrogant swagger, carrying a black leather portfolio, his chin held high as he greeted the directors with booming, rehearsed executive warmth.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Brandon announced, taking his seat at the head of the obsidian table. "As you know, our quarterly operational audit is complete. Today, we formalize the transition of executive authority from my father to myself, and we ratify the new strategic partnership with Miss Cole’s logistics advisory group."

Marcus Bell leaned forward, setting down three copies of the transition resolution.

"We have the proxy certificates signed by Brandon," Marcus Bell stated. "We require only the formal certification of the controlling share block to close the governance record."

The heavy double mahogany doors at the rear of the boardroom swung inward with concussive, hydraulic force.

Every director turned their head.

Daniel Mercer, chief financial officer of Bennett Holdings, walked into the room. He was sixty, silver-haired, dressed in a severe black three-piece suit, his presence commanding immediate, breathless silence across the twelve-man board.

Following Daniel was Frank Callahan, the most feared corporate trial litigator in New York, carrying three heavy, red-embossed evidentiary binders stamped with the gold seal of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.

And walking between them, her presence radiating the absolute, terrifying stillness of an undisputed monarch, was Claire Bennett Whitmore.

Brandon jumped to his feet, his face darkening with instant, furious irritation.

"Claire?" Brandon snapped, his voice booming across the boardroom. "What are you doing here? Security! Who authorized a domestic spouse to enter an executive board session? Get her out of this room immediately!"

None of the security guards near the entrance moved.

They stood at rigid, frozen attention, their eyes fixed straight ahead.

Daniel Mercer walked slowly down the center carpeted aisle, stopping at the foot of the obsidian table.

He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a thick, notarized corporate charter bound in dark navy leather, and laid it flat onto the glass surface with a concussive thud that rattled the crystal water tumblers.

"Take your hands off that chair, Mr. Whitmore," Daniel Mercer said, his baritone slicing through the room like a cold broadsword. "You are not the chairman of this meeting."
