Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Awakening

Two hours later, the private executive boardroom on the seventieth floor of the Apex Tower was humming with quiet, expensive tension.
Seated around the thirty-foot mahogany conference table were the newly appointed executive board members, regional directors, and the federal prosecutors overseeing the dismantling of Richard Vance’s criminal syndicate.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Chairman Jonathan Bennett walked in first, standing tall and unyielding. But walking right beside him—wearing a brand-new, perfectly tailored charcoal suit provided by the chairman’s personal tailor, his hazel eyes wide with awe—was nineteen-year-old Jake Miller.
Following closely behind them were Jake’s mother, Sarah, and his sister, Maya, who had been brought down from their apartment by a private corporate town car, completely bewildered by the sudden turn of events. Sarah sat in a comfortable velvet chair at the head of the table, while Maya stared in slack-jawed wonder at the panoramic view of the glittering Chicago skyline stretching out beneath the stormy clouds.
Arthur Sterling stood at the head of the mahogany table, clearing his throat to call the emergency session to order.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur began, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "Today, Apex Prestige Motors underwent a complete and total moral decontamination. The cancer that was Richard Vance has been excised, and federal authorities have seized every illicit asset associated with his network."
Arthur turned his head toward Jake, gesturing respectfully.
"However, an enterprise is only as strong as the integrity of its people. When faced with intimidation and the threat of absolute ruin, nineteen-year-old sales associate Jake Miller chose human empathy over corporate compliance. He defended a stranger when a room full of professionals looked away."
The entire board of directors—twelve seasoned corporate titans—stood up in absolute, reverent unison, breaking into a thunderous, sustained round of applause that shook the crystal chandeliers.
Jake’s face flushed a deep, embarrassed crimson. He looked down at his polished leather shoes, feeling completely unworthy of the roaring praise.
Chairman Bennett stepped up to the podium, placing a heavy, affectionate hand on Jake’s shoulder.
"We recovered over twelve million dollars in embezzled funds during today’s raid, Jake," Bennett announced, absolute sovereignty ringing in his voice. "And as part of the board's first official restructuring decree, a permanent, fully endowed educational trust has been established for your sister Maya’s university tuition, alongside a lifetime medical endowment for your mother’s treatments."
Maya gasped, covering her mouth with her hands as tears of pure, unadulterated relief spilled over her lashes. Sarah closed her eyes, letting out a ragged, sobbing breath of gratitude, whispering a silent prayer of thanksgiving.
"And as for your position at Apex Automotive," Chairman Bennett continued, smiling warmly. "The board has unanimously voted to appoint you as our new National Director of Customer Experience and Corporate Ethics. Starting salary: three hundred thousand dollars a year, complete equity shares, and an office right down the hall from mine."

Jake stared at the chairman, his knees suddenly turning to water. "Three hundred... thousand? Sir, I'm a college sophomore! I don't know anything about running a national corporation!"
"You know how to treat a human being with dignity, Jake," Bennett stated firmly. "Everything else can be taught. Welcome to the executive suite, son."
