Chapter 9 - The Trial of Margaret Vance

Six months after the incident on the marble floor of the Grand Elysium, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York was packed to absolute capacity.

The public trial of Arthur and Margaret Vance had become the most sensational legal spectacle of the decade. The city’s high society, which had spent years kissing Margaret’s ring and competing for invitations to her galas, now filled the mahogany pews to witness her absolute, crushing ruin.

Margaret sat at the defense table, wearing a drab, ill-fitting gray wool dress that had been purchased off the rack at a department store. Her signature diamond choker had been seized by federal marshals to satisfy the nine-million-dollar civil restitution judgment filed by the Valle estate; her golden hair hung in limp, unstyled graying strands around her hollow, haggard face.

Beside her sat Arthur, dressed in a plain blue prison-issue suit, his spirit completely broken by six months in federal custody.

At the center of the judicial bench sat Chief Judge Robert Sterling—an austere, unbending jurist whose reputation for statutory discipline was legendary across the federal circuit.

Judge Sterling adjusted his half-moon reading glasses and looked down at the defense table with eyes that could have stripped rust from a tanker hull.

"On the charges of Conspiracy to Commit Maritime Sabotage, Attempted Murder across International Borders, Interstate Wire Fraud, and Aggravated Assault on a Public Sovereign Representative," Judge Sterling’s voice boomed through the cavernous chamber, "the jury has returned a verdict of guilty on all forty-six counts."

Margaret let out a sharp, choked gasp, burying her face in her trembling, unadorned hands.

Judge Sterling slammed his heavy oak gavel onto the sound block.

CRACK.

"Arthur Vance," Judge Sterling decreed, his voice dropping into a register of devastating finality. "You orchestrated the murder of your closest friend and benefactor, terrorized a grieving widow for twenty years, and embezzled tens of millions of dollars from an institution that trusted your stewardship. It is the sentence of this Court that you be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for the remainder of your natural life, to be served at the United States Penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, without the possibility of parole."

Arthur bowed his head, letting out a long, shuddering sob as two federal marshals stepped up behind his chair.

Judge Sterling turned his piercing gaze upon Margaret.

"Margaret Vance. You spent two decades living luxuriously on the proceeds of your husband’s bloody crimes. When confronted with the surviving child of the family you helped destroy, your response was not remorse, but public violence, physical assault, and class-based cruelty."

The judge picked up the sentencing decree.

"On the counts of Accessory to Grand Larceny, Criminal Witness Intimidation, and Aggravated Assault, you are hereby sentenced to fourteen years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut. Furthermore, all personal assets, trusts, and properties held in your name are declared forfeit under the Federal Racketeering statutes."

Judge Sterling struck his gavel down one final time.

CRACK.

"Court is adjourned."

Margaret shrieked—a raw, shrill sound of pure, unadulterated despair—as two female marshals hauled her to her feet, clicking steel handcuffs around her wrists.

As she was turned toward the holding cell doors, her desperate, tear-blurred eyes scanned the gallery.

Sitting in the front row of the public pews, directly behind the prosecution table, was Charlotte Valle.

Charlotte was dressed in an understated navy silk blouse and dark trousers, sitting upright with her hands folded in her lap. Beside her sat Sebastian, his weathered hand resting over hers.

Charlotte did not look at Margaret with hatred. She did not smirk. She did not gloat.

She looked at her former abuser with the calm, terrifying detachment of an ocean wave washing over a sandcastle, watching the remnants of an arrogant dynasty dissolve into nothingness.

Margaret’s knees buckled. Her heels dragged against the carpet as the heavy steel security doors swung open, swallowing her into the gray, concrete shadows of federal prison forever.
