Chapter 9 - The Rebirth of Chicago

Six months later, spring had returned to Chicago.

The federal courthouse on Dearborn Street was swarming with reporters, news cameras, and flashing lights.

Federal Judge Arthur Vance had just handed down the final sentencing in the high-profile fraud and embezzlement trial of *United States v. Richard and Jonathan Davis*.

Richard Davis had been sentenced to twenty-two years in federal prison with no possibility of parole, his company stripped, his personal fortune completely confiscated for restitution. Jonathan Davis, facing additional charges of corporate espionage, burglary, and conspiracy to commit aggravated extortion, had received thirty-two years at a maximum-security penitentiary in southern Illinois.

The courtroom doors opened, and a flood of journalists rushed down the marble stairs.

Clara Davis walked out into the bright May sunlight.

She was breathtaking. She wore an ivory-tailored dress that hugged her curves with regal perfection, paired with a matching blazer and high heels that clicked with authority on the stone steps. Her dark hair flowed over her shoulders, and her face was serene, radiant, and completely free of the shadows that had haunted her for years.

Beside her, holding her hand with quiet, possessive pride, was Gabriel Marino.

He wore a bespoke navy suit, his posture relaxed, his dark eyes sweeping the crowd with cold warning. The reporters, eager as they were for a quote, kept a respectful five-foot distance from the couple, well aware of who stood beside the new titan of Chicago logistics.

“Ms. Davis! Ms. Davis!” a reporter from the *Chicago Tribune* shouted, thrusting a microphone forward. “How do you feel about the sentencing of your father and brother?”

Clara paused on the mid-level landing. She didn't hide. She didn't shrink. She looked straight into the camera lens with calm, unshakable dignity.

“Justice was served by the courts today,” Clara said clearly, her voice carrying over the crowd. “The Davis family name was built on exploitation, deceit, and abuse. Today, that name ceases to exist in the business community.”

“And what about Northshore Logistics?” another reporter asked. “Rumors say your company just secured the exclusive freight transport contract for the entire St. Lawrence Seaway expansion!”

A confident, brilliant smile touched Clara’s lips.

“Northshore Logistics is currently the most transparent, efficient, and well-managed transport enterprise in the Great Lakes,” Clara said proudly. “We employ over four thousand hardworking men and women who receive fair wages, full benefits, and the respect they deserve. We aren't looking back. We are looking forward.”

Gabriel stepped closer, his arm wrapping naturally around Clara’s waist. He looked down at her, a rare, genuine smile softening the fierce planes of his face.

“That’s enough questions for today,” Gabriel told the press, his voice quiet but commanding enough to instantly silence the crowd. “Ms. Davis has an empire to run.”

With the cameras flashing continuously behind them, Gabriel escorted Clara down the steps to the waiting black town car. Marco held the door open, offering Clara a broad, respectful grin.

“Afternoon, Boss,” Marco said warmly.

“Afternoon, Marco,” Clara replied with a wink.
