Chapter 8 - The Gala Retaliation

Monday morning arrived not with rain, but with the cold, blinding glare of an autumn sun reflecting off the granite pillars of the Manhattan Family Court.
The steps of the courthouse were swarming.
Over fifty journalists and television crews were held back by barricades. The story had exploded across social media over the weekend: *Billionaire Julian Cross dumps heiress Vivian Lawrence after maid’s uniform torn at charity gala; allegations of corporate espionage and physical assault surface.*
Vivian Lawrence arrived first.
She wore a demure, charcoal-grey Chanel suit designed to make her look like a grieving, innocent victim. Flanked by her father, Senator Lawrence, and a legal team of twelve attorneys in dark wool coats, she swept past the cameras without speaking, though her eyes were rimmed with venomous rage.
Ten minutes later, a convoy of black SUVs pulled up to the curb.
When Julian Cross stepped out, the flashes were blinding. But he didn't move toward the steps alone.
He turned, offering his hand into the vehicle.
Elena Brooks emerged.
She wore a simple, impeccably tailored emerald-green silk dress that reached past her knees, with a high collar that framed her slender throat. Her hair was styled in an elegant French twist, revealing the proud, graceful line of her neck. She wore no jewelry except for a pair of pearl earrings Julian had left on her dressing table that morning. Beside her, dressed in a neat navy blazer and pleated skirt, walked Lily, holding her sister’s hand with unwavering confidence.
The crowd erupted. Questions were shouted over the roar of traffic, but Julian simply placed his hand at Elena’s back, shielding her with his body as his private security cleared a path through the crush.
Inside Courtroom 402, the air was suffocatingly hot.
Judge Arthur Holbrook sat behind the high mahogany bench, his bushy white eyebrows drawn together in deep irritation.
“I will have order in this courtroom!” Holbrook barked, slamming his gavel down three times. “This is a closed family matter, not a three-ring circus! If I hear one more whisper from the gallery, I will hold the entire room in contempt!”
At the plaintiff’s table sat Marcus Vance, sweating profusely in a new suit that clearly didn't belong to him. Beside him was Jonathan Pierce, the Lawrence family’s most ruthless litigation attorney.
At the defense table sat Elena, Lily, Evelyn Vance, and Julian Cross.
“Your Honor,” Pierce began, rising with the smooth, condescending arrogance of a veteran litigator. “We are here on an emergency petition for the removal of the minor, Lily Brooks, from the custody of her half-sister, Elena Brooks. The respondent is an unmarried woman with no documented stable income, living in a substandard, hazardous rental property in Crown Heights. Furthermore, recent public events demonstrate that the respondent is involved in volatile, high-profile altercations, creating an environment entirely unsuitable for a fourteen-year-old girl.”
Pierce gestured toward Marcus. “Mr. Vance is the biological father. He has secured a stable residence in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and possesses the resources to provide Miss Brooks with a safe, traditional upbringing.”
Judge Holbrook adjusted his glasses, looking down at Elena. “Miss Brooks. What say you to these claims?”
Evelyn Vance stood up smoothly. “Your Honor, Mr. Pierce’s petition is not only frivolous; it is a fraudulent abuse of the judicial process funded entirely by a third party with a personal vendetta against my client.”
“Objection!” Pierce shouted. “Baseless speculation!”
“Is it?” Evelyn smiled like a shark scenting chum. She opened a thick leather folder. “I submit to the court Exhibit A: bank records demonstrating a direct wire transfer of seventy-five thousand dollars from an offshore LLC controlled by Senator Richard Lawrence into Mr. Marcus Vance’s personal account, executed forty-eight hours prior to this filing.”
Judge Holbrook’s eyebrows shot up. He glared at Marcus. “Is this true, Mr. Vance?”
Marcus swallowed hard, his collar visibly choking him. He looked desperately at Pierce, then at the gallery where Senator Lawrence sat in the front row. Marcus didn't say a word.
“Furthermore,” Evelyn continued, her voice ringing with absolute authority, “regarding the respondent’s financial stability: Miss Brooks is the newly appointed Executive Director of the Navarro Foundation, with a guaranteed four-year contract at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually. And as for the living arrangements…”
Evelyn turned slightly, nodding to Julian.
Julian stood up. The entire courtroom seemed to contract around his presence.
“Your Honor,” Julian said, his deep voice commanding absolute silence. “I am Julian Cross. I am appearing today as a character witness for Elena Brooks, and as the co-signer on the deed of a five-bedroom brownstone on 74th Street, which has been placed into an irrevocable trust for the sole benefit of Lily Brooks.”
Senator Lawrence stood up in the gallery, his face purple with fury. “This is an outrage! Your Honor, he is using his wealth to subvert this court!”
*BANG!*
Judge Holbrook’s gavel struck the wood like thunder.
“Senator Lawrence, you will sit down and shut your mouth, or I will have the bailiff put you in irons!” the judge roared.
The Senator froze, his mouth hanging open, then slowly sank back into his bench, glaring murder at Julian.
Judge Holbrook looked down at Marcus Vance. The disgust on the old jurist’s face was unmistakable.
“Mr. Vance,” Holbrook said, his voice dripping with contempt. “You have abandoned this child for over a decade. You have failed to pay court-ordered child support totaling over eighty thousand dollars. And now you appear before me, subsidized by corporate funds, attempting to strip a young girl from the only mother she has ever known?”
Marcus began to tremble. “Your Honor, I… I just wanted to be a father—”
“Enough,” Judge Holbrook cut him off. He picked up his pen. “The petition for emergency custody is dismissed with prejudice. Full, permanent legal and physical custody of Lily Brooks is awarded to Elena Brooks.”
Lily burst into tears, throwing her arms around Elena’s neck. Elena buried her face in her sister’s hair, her shoulders shaking with silent, heaving sobs of pure, unadulterated relief. The nightmare that had haunted her for two years was finally, completely over.
“Additionally,” Judge Holbrook’s voice rang out, “I am referring Mr. Marcus Vance and Mr. Jonathan Pierce to the District Attorney’s office for investigation into criminal bribery and perjury.”
The gavel fell with a final, decisive crack.
Elena looked up through her tears. Across the defense table, Julian was watching her. He wasn't smiling; his eyes were shining with a fierce, quiet triumph.
He mouthed four words across the space between them:
May you like
*You are safe now.*
