Chapter 10 - Dawn Over the Harbor

Two months later.

The spring sun was rising over the Atlantic, painting the gray waters of the harbor in long ribbons of rose gold and amber. The storm that had raged over the city for weeks had finally cleared, leaving the air crisp, sweet, and clean.

The Falcone enterprise had transformed.

The betrayal of Sal and the Morettis had ended with the complete consolidation of the waterfront under Dominic’s command. But under Gemma’s relentless guidance, the dirty shell companies and extortion rackets had been aggressively restructured. Billions of dollars were moving into legitimate maritime logistics, green energy ports, and community trusts that federal prosecutors couldn't touch even with a subpoena.

She had proven that a brilliant mind with a spreadsheet was ten times more lethal—and a hundred times more profitable—than a thousand men with guns.

At the head of the long mahogany boardroom table in the Falcone Tower, the atmosphere was vastly different from that fateful 3:14 a.m. meeting.

Dante sat to the left, impeccably dressed, reviewing legitimate corporate balance sheets with a look of genuine respect on his face. When he looked at Gemma now, there was no contempt—only the deference given to an underboss’s equal.

Gemma sat to Dominic’s right.

She wore a sharp, tailored navy suit that fit her like armor, but her hair was down, falling in soft waves over her shoulders. On the ring finger of her left hand sat a modest, flawless emerald band—a private promise made in the quiet library of the upstate estate.

Dominic sat back in his leather chair, looking at the city below. His shoulder had healed into a jagged, pale scar that Gemma kissed every night in the dark of his penthouse bedroom.

“The third-quarter projections are finalized,” Gemma said, closing her leather folio with a satisfying snap. “The federal audit has been officially closed without findings. The port is ours, legally and indisputably.”

Dante smiled, closing his folder as well. “Never thought I’d see the day the Department of Justice sent us a thank-you letter for tax compliance. Miss Hayes… you're a miracle worker.”

“She is more than that,” Dominic said, his low voice silencing the room effortlessly.

He looked at Dante and the other senior capos seated around the table.

“The meeting is adjourned,” Dominic commanded gently. “Get out.”

This time, the men didn't leave in fear. They stood, gave respectful nods to both Dominic and Gemma, and quietly exited the boardroom, closing the heavy oak double doors behind them.

Silence settled over the high-rise suite.

Gemma let out a long, contented breath, leaning back in her chair. The exhaustion of the last two months was still there, but it was no longer heavy. It was the sweet fatigue of victory.

She turned her head to find Dominic watching her, his slate-gray eyes filled with a quiet, profound warmth that no one else in the world would ever be permitted to see.

“You look tired, Miss Hayes,” he murmurs, his lips curving into a faint, devastating smile.

Gemma chuckled, sliding her chair closer to his until their armrests touched. “Are you going to fire me if I fall asleep on the job again, Mr. Falcone?”

“Try it,” Dominic challenged softly, his uninjured arm lifting, opening an invitation she no longer had to hesitate to accept. “See what happens to the meeting.”

Gemma smiled, leaned sideways, and rested her head against his shoulder.

Dominic’s arm came around her, pulling her securely against his chest, his chin resting against the crown of her dark hair. He inhaled the scent of sweet apple and soap, his fingers gently tracing the curve of her arm down to her hand, intertwining their fingers over the mahogany table.

Outside, the city was waking up, a sprawling concrete jungle of ambition, danger, and endless shadows. New enemies would rise, new threats would emerge from the fog, and the peace they had bought with blood would always be fragile.

Dominic knew the violence would never entirely vanish from his life.

He looked down at the woman resting peacefully against his heart, her breathing steady and deep, holding his hand as if he were her entire world.

He didn't need the world to be quiet. He only needed her beside him.

Dominic closed his eyes, pressed a soft kiss into her hair, and for the first time in his life, let the morning sun wash over them both—ready for whatever war was coming next, as long as they fought it together.
