Chapter 3 - The Cold Room in Midtown

The conference room on the thirty-second floor of the Equitable Building did not smell of bacon and chicory coffee.

It smelled of commercial air scrubbers, expensive leather upholstery, and the sterile chill of sixty-four-degree automated climate control. The panoramic windows overlooked the forested sprawl of northern Atlanta, the late morning sun reflecting blinding sheets of silver off the glass skyscrapers of Buckhead.

Adrien Brooks sat at the sixty-foot mahogany conference table.

He had not taken off his suit jacket. His tie was pulled down half an inch, his collar unbuttoned, his jaw shadowed by dark stubble that made him look ten years older than he had on the basketball court at sunrise.

Sitting across from him was Arthur Ross.

Seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling International Legal, Arthur had served as the Brooks family's chief legal strategist since Adrien’s mother, Loretta, had bought her second garbage truck with a second mortgage on her brick house in West End. Arthur wore an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his gold-rimmed spectacles resting on a sheaf of unsealed corporate filings.

Beside Arthur sat David Sterling, the sixty-year-old forensic accountant who commanded the firm’s private auditing division.

"Give me the paper, Arthur," Adrien said.

His voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried the subsonic density of an unsealed indictment.

Arthur turned his pen between two weathered fingers. "The Vance termination file was flagged six weeks ago during the routine municipal compliance review, Adrien. It was buried under twelve layers of operational exceptions signed by Julian Sterling."

David Sterling opened his laptop, rotating the screen toward Adrien:

FORENSIC AUDIT: CONTRACT #BE-2026-MUNI-0941

VENDOR: VANCE AUTOMOTIVE DIAGNOSTICS LLC

INVOICED SERVICES: 62 HEAVY HYDRAULIC & BRAKE CERTIFICATIONS ($84,200.00)

STATUS: SEQUESTERED IN ESCROW ACCOUNT #9914 (FIRST SOUTHERN COMMERCIAL BANK)

DISPOSITION: FUNDS DIVERTED ON OCTOBER 14 TO 'APEX GLOBAL LOGISTICS LLC' (DELAWARE REGISTRATION).

Adrien leaned forward, his fingers digging into the edge of the mahogany table until the wood groaned beneath the pressure. "Who owns Apex Global Logistics?"

"Julian Sterling owns sixty percent through a blind trust in Grand Cayman," David Sterling reported, his voice flat, emotionless, and devastating. "The remaining forty percent is held by Marcus Vance—Thomas Vance’s estranged first cousin, who runs an unlicensed commercial salvage yard off Moreland Avenue."

Adrien closed his eyes for three long seconds.

The image of Clara Vance standing in the diner—her thin fingers clutching six crumpled dollars, her daughter’s ribs visible beneath a faded pink sweatshirt—burned against his retinas like a branding iron.

He had built Brooks Environmental on a single, sacred rule taught to him by Loretta Brooks: You pay the man who turns the wrench before you take a dime for yourself.

For fifteen years, he had told himself that his executives carried that same blood-and-iron integrity. He had spent the last three years delegating regional operations so he could sit on charity boards, build community scholarship endowments, and play basketball with his son, while three floors beneath his office, his chief operating officer was running a counterfeit parts ring and starving an honest mechanic's family into the grave.

"Where is Julian right now?" Adrien asked.

"He is in the main dispatch theater on the fourth floor," Arthur Ross replied, checking his pocket watch. "He convened an emergency operational meeting with sixty fleet supervisors at ten-thirty to enforce the new overtime penalties."

Adrien stood up.

He didn't yell. He didn't slam his fist onto the table.

He adjusted the cuffs of his white shirt, buttoned the center horn button of his bespoke jacket, and looked at Arthur Ross.

"Arthur," Adrien commanded softly.

"Yes, Adrien?"

"Call Chief Investigator Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Economic Crimes Division and Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Tell them to bring four tactical units to the fourth floor."

Adrien walked to the private executive elevator, his slate-gray eyes colder than the winter Atlantic.

"And Arthur?"

May you like

"Sir?"

"Call the Drew Charter School on East Lake Road. Find out if Maya Vance finished her examination."
