Chapter 4 - The Brother’s Betrayal

"I’m looking at your signature on a quitclaim deed transferring Mom’s house to Julianna’s LLC, Richard," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute stillness.
The line went dead silent for five agonizing seconds. The background noise of a busy office in McLean seemed to vanish.
"Elena," Richard began, his tone shifting from bluster to a strained, patronizing cadence. "You don't understand the financial situation. Mom's care costs fourteen thousand dollars a month. Her Medicare benefits reached their lifetime cap for skilled home nursing in July. Julianna offered a structured equity-release program through her healthcare firm to keep Mom in her own home instead of a nursing facility."
"Julianna is tying her to the bed, Richard," Elena said, every syllable hitting like a hammer. "She has ligature contusions around both wrists. Her arms are covered in deep hematomas, and she is being dosed with unregulated chemical sedatives that mimic dementia."
"That’s a lie!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic. "Julianna is a licensed healthcare provider! Mom is delirious, Elena! She falls out of bed because of her neuropathy! The soft wrist restraints were authorized by Dr. Rusk for fall prevention!"
"Dr. Calvin Rusk had his medical license suspended in Maryland three years ago for running an illegal prescription mill, Richard," Elena replied, pulling up the state licensing database on her tablet. "I checked his credentials fifteen minutes ago. Did you think I wouldn't verify the names on these forms?"
Richard exhaled hard, the sound of papers rustling violently on his desk. "Listen to me, Elena. I am the primary legal executor of Dad’s estate. You live six hundred miles away in Chicago. You don't know what it takes to manage a declining parent. Julianna has power of attorney. If you interfere with Mom’s prescribed care, I will have the county sheriff remove you from that house for domestic trespassing."
"You won't have anyone removed, Richard," Elena said calmly. "Because I just submitted a forensic toxicological panel request to the State Department of Health, and I am calling Adult Protective Services and the Special Victims Unit right now."

"Elena! Don't you dare—"
Elena ended the call, blocked Richard’s number, and dialed Detective Raymond Vance of the Fairfax County Police Department’s Elder Financial and Physical Abuse Division.
