Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Deepwater Vault

Dante’s reaction was instantaneous.

In half a heartbeat, his Kimber .45 cleared its holster, his broad frame shifting to completely shield my body against the green steel safe.

Standing on the iron landing at the top of the spiral stairs was Helena Vance.

She wore a dark fur-trimmed trench coat, her platinum hair gleaming beneath the yellow maintenance lights. Flanking her were four private tactical operators in black ballistic vests, all leveling suppressed submachine guns down the narrow shaft.

"Lower the weapon, Dante," Helena said smoothly, holding a gold-plated lighter in her manicured hand. "A single discharge down here will ignite the hydraulic aerosol vapors in the ventilation ducts. We would all burn together, and I have a board meeting to attend at dawn."

Dante didn't lower the Kimber. His slate-gray eyes were locked onto Helena’s throat with lethal, unblinking stillness.

"You followed us," Dante said.

"Of course I followed you, darling," Helena laughed softly, stepping down two stairs, her leather boots ringing against the iron grating. "Did you really think Arthur Ross’s little cybersecurity team was the only group with backdoors into the Port Authority network? I’ve owned the telemetry sensors on this pier for ten years."

She pointed her lighter toward the blue ledger resting in my hands.

"Toss the book up here, Emma," Helena commanded, her voice dropping into a sharp, brittle register. "Along with the cashier's checks. Sign the waiver transferring your father's underlying crane patents to Apex Sovereign, and I will let you walk back to Queens. Your mother can live out her remaining months in comfort."

"And if I refuse?" I asked, stepping out from behind Dante’s shoulder, my chin lifted high, my voice ringing through the subterranean vault with unyielding, sovereign courage.

Helena’s smile curdled into an expression of pure, feral cruelty.

"If you refuse, Emma, the coroner will report that you and Dante suffered an accidental chemical asphyxiation while attempting an illegal break-in on state property," Helena sneered. "The board will convene at nine o'clock, ratify my emergency trusteeship, and your mother’s hospital machines will be unplugged before lunch."

"You forgot one detail, Helena," I said softly.

Helena’s eyebrows drew together. "What detail?"

"My father built this pump room," I answered.

With a lightning-fast motion of my left boot, I kicked the red emergency pressure-relief valve situated at the base of the secondary hydraulic manifold beside my knee.

HISS-SSSS-BOOM.

A massive, concussive blast of superheated water and non-toxic extinguishing foam erupted from the overhead suppression nozzles, creating an impenetrable, blinding wall of white steam that engulfed the stairwell in half a second.

"Fire! Fire through the steam!" Helena shrieked.

PUP-PUP-PUP.

Suppressed rounds ricocheted wildly off the green steel safe and the granite bedrock, but Dante was already moving.

With savage, terrifying precision, Dante lunged through the blinding mist. Two muffled thuds and the sickening crack of bone echoed through the steam as he disarmed the first two operatives before they could reacquire their targets.

He caught the third man by the throat, slamming his skull into the concrete pillar with enough hydraulic force to crack the masonry, while the fourth operator dropped his weapon and fled toward the upper dock in sheer, unadulterated panic.

Dante stepped through the dissipating foam, holding Helena Vance by the collar of her expensive trench coat, lifting her off her feet until her designer heels dangled six inches above the grated floor.

The platinum blonde was choking, her face an ugly, mottled purple, her diamond earrings tangled in her disheveled hair as her manicured hands clawed frantically at Dante’s iron wrists.

"Dante... please..." Helena wheezed, pure terror finally shattering her aristocratic mask.

May you like

Dante lowered her slowly, pinning her against the iron railing of the stairs, his face three inches from hers.

"You don't die down here in the dark, Helena," Dante whispered, each word falling like frozen lead. "That would be far too merciful. You are going to put on your finest Chanel suit, walk into the grand ballroom of the Union League Club at noon tomorrow, and watch the daughter of Thomas Vance tear your empire down with her bare hands."
