Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Ledger

Five years after the morning that changed everything, the autumn sun rose over the Manhattan skyline in a brilliant, blinding wash of liquid gold, burning the morning mist off the East River until the glass towers of the financial district sparkled like a field of crushed diamonds.
At 8:30 AM, the digital clock on my dual-monitor setup clicked to life in the thirty-fifth-floor corner office of Lane Forensic & Compliance Solutions.
8:30:00 AM.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the commuter traffic was flowing smoothly across the Brooklyn Bridge.
I stood by the glass, holding a ceramic mug of dark roast coffee, looking down at the bustling stream of professionals rushing along Broadway.
My phone buzzed softly on the desk.
It was a secure email notification from the federal parole board:
OFFICIAL PAROLE REVIEW DENIED: INMATE #88412-054 (VANCE, JULIAN)
REASON: UNCONTRITION, SEVERE RISK OF REOFFENSE, PERMANENT BAR FROM FINANCIAL SERVICES.
I swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and placed the phone back down on the polished wood.
The past was a closed file, archived in an unalterable database that required no further review.
The double doors of my office clicked open.
Arthur Miller and Clara Sterling stepped inside, holding fresh pastries and steaming cups of coffee, laughing as they argued about the logistics of our upcoming London expansion office.
I turned away from the window, walked out of the corner office, and joined my team in the center of the bullpen.

The ledgers were balanced. The system was secure.
And as the 9:30 opening bell rang across Wall Street, the morning belonged entirely to the truth.
