Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Estate

Over the next three months, the Moretti estate on Long Island underwent a profound, historic transformation.

The dark, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the mansion during the years of conflict and arranged alliances was systematically eradicated.

Alessandro ordered a complete purge of every room associated with the Cole family's influence. The ostentatious modern sculptures, the cold velvet drapes, and the locked guest wings were dismantled and replaced by soaring architectural glass walls that flooded every hallway with clean northern sunlight.

The west wing was completely remodeled under my direction into a modern, sunlit family residence.

We installed wide white oak flooring, open bookshelves filled with classic literature, and a sprawling open-air playroom that opened out onto lush gardens of fragrant lavender, white hydrangeas, and ancient weeping willows overlooking the bay.

I was officially appointed as the Executive Director of the Moretti-Hayes Community Development Foundation—a seventy-million-dollar philanthropic trust dedicated to funding advanced workplace safety standards, free collegiate engineering scholarships, and comprehensive healthcare clinics for dockworkers and maritime laborers across the Eastern Seaboard.

On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in late spring, I stood on the wide cedar veranda overlooking the private harbor, sipping fresh roast coffee.

Down on the emerald green lawn near the stone fountain, four-year-old Emma was running with energetic, fearless speed, playing tag with Barnaby, a playful golden retriever puppy Alessandro had gifted her for her fourth birthday.

Alessandro walked out through the French doors, wearing an open-collared white linen shirt and dark trousers, carrying two porcelain mugs of fresh cider.

He stepped beside me, resting his arm gently across the cedar balustrade, his shoulder brushing against mine.

"How does it feel, Director Hayes?" Alessandro asked softly, a warm, tender smile touching his lips.

I looked out over the sparkling blue waters of the sound where the white sailboats glided peacefully toward the open horizon under a cloudless sky.

"It feels like daylight, Alessandro," I answered with a heart full of absolute, unbreakable peace. "Pure, sovereign daylight."

Alessandro set his mug down, turning to face me. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently taking mine, his fingers intertwining with mine over the wooden railing.

"Clara," Alessandro murmured, his slate-gray eyes shining with boundless, eternal devotion. "Three years ago, you walked into this house carrying your daughter, expecting nothing from the world. You gave this house its soul back. You showed me that a man who commands an empire is nothing without the truth."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a simple, exquisite ring of pure platinum, set with a flawless, brilliant sapphire that caught the morning light like deep ocean water.

"Stay with me, Clara," Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling with sacred emotion. "Not as a director, not as an ally. As my wife. As my equal in every room."

May you like

Tears of pure, radiant joy spilled down my cheeks as I looked into the eyes of the man who had torn down a kingdom to protect my daughter.

"Yes, Alessandro," I smiled through my tears, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes."
