Chapter 9 - The Federal Trial of Victor Ivanov

Six months later, the United States District Court in Lower Manhattan convened for the formal criminal trial of The United States versus Victor Ivanov and Vanguard Petroleum Logistics.
The trial drew unprecedented international media coverage, dominating the front pages of every major publication, exposing the chilling reality of transnational pipeline assassinations, offshore corporate embezzlement, and the violent extortion networks that had operated behind legitimate commercial shipping.
Anastasia and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery dressed in tailored dark wool coats, holding hands firmly.
Victor Ivanov sat at the defense table in an orange federal inmate jumpsuit.
The transformation was absolute.
Without his bespoke leather coats, diamond signet rings, and armed mercenaries, Ivanov looked like a hollow, broken phantom, his silver hair unkempt, his hands and ankles bound in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step.
Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented one hundred and twelve exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the decrypted Swiss wire transfers, the recovered ballistic casings from Tank Farm Four, and the unedited audio recordings proving Ivanov had murdered Anastasia's father on Lake Baikal.
When Frank Callahan presented the final physical exhibit—the cracked, leaded crystal wine goblet from Le Jardin Noir and the black Siberian jade pendant—the entire courtroom fell into an absolute, sacred hush.
"A corrupt underboss used fire, murder, and treason to usurp an ancient commercial dynasty," Marcus Reed told the jury, his voice ringing with profound moral clarity. "And the rightful heir survived five years in the freezing shadows, walked into his private dining room in an emerald dress, and dismantled an empire of blood with the truth."
The federal jury deliberated for exactly eighteen minutes.
The foreperson stood in a packed, breathless courtroom and delivered the verdict across all thirty-six felony counts:
"On all counts of First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Interstate Racketeering under the RICO Act, Corporate Extortion, and Grand Maritime Larceny—Guilty on all counts."
Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the maximum statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:
"Victor Ivanov, you committed acts of monstrous, calculated cruelty to satisfy an insatiable, criminal greed," Judge Montgomery declared. "You are hereby sentenced to Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado."
The wooden gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

Ivanov collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in bitter, total ruin as armed federal marshals moved in to drag the disgraced traitor down the subterranean holding corridor forever.
Anastasia and I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Frank Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
