Chapter 4 - The Voice on the Line

The silence on the other end of the phone line stretched on for so long I thought the call had disconnected. Then, a sharp, ragged gasp echoed through the receiver, followed by the unmistakable sound of porcelain clattering against wood.

"Elena?" Eleanor Sterling’s voice trembled, losing all of its aristocratic polish in a single, shattering beat. "Did you say... Elena? My God. Julian’s wife?"

"Yes, Eleanor," I said, gripping the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. "Your son’s wife. And I’m calling from his office in Massachusetts. I found the brass box behind his desk."

A ragged sob broke through the phone speaker.

"Eleven years, my dear," Eleanor wept, her voice breaking into an agonizing tremor. "Eleven years we’ve begged him to let us see our grandchildren. He told us... he told us you despised our wealth, that you threatened to run away with the children if we ever contacted you directly. He said you were unstable, that you refused to let the children step foot in Maine."

Anger flared in my chest—hot, blistering, and absolute.

"Julian told you I was unstable?" I demanded, my voice rising. "He told us you thought we were unwanted trash! He used our poverty as a weapon, Eleanor. While we were struggling to afford groceries last winter, he was sitting in your mansion letting you believe we wanted nothing to do with you."

"The manipulative, narcissistic bastard," Eleanor hissed, the patrician matriarch returning instantly, her voice hardening into pure, lethal ice. "Arthur and I cut him off from the primary voting shares of the shipping conglomerate six years ago because we suspected he was embezzling from our philanthropic trusts, but we never dreamed he would do this. We thought he was supporting you with his salary."

"He has no salary," I replied bitterly. "He works a mid-level compliance job that barely covers our mortgage, while he spends his summers playing the wealthy heir at your estate using money he siphoned from your accounts."

"Not anymore," Eleanor declared, the sound of her hand slamming against a mahogany desk echoing through the line. "Elena, listen to me very carefully. Julian arrived at the estate less than twenty minutes ago. He is currently sitting in our drawing room, sipping Scotch and telling my husband about how he 'generously provided' for his struggling little family in Massachusetts."

A cold, wicked smile touched the corners of my lips.

"Is that so, Julian?" I murmured.

"Get your children, Elena," Eleanor commanded, her tone dropping into an octave of absolute, terrifying authority. "Pack your bags. I am sending our private Gulfstream chartered jet to Logan Airport within the hour. Tell Maya and Toby they are going to see the ocean today. And leave Julian entirely to me."

"No, Eleanor," I corrected softly. "Don't send the jet for us yet. Send the car for me. Just me. I want to arrive in Bar Harbor unannounced, while Julian thinks he’s safe in his mother’s drawing room."

A dark, approving chuckle came through the phone.

"My car will be in your driveway in forty-five minutes, my dear," Eleanor said. "Welcome to the family."
