Chapter 5 - The Unmasking of the Syndicate

By 1:30 p.m., the executive war room on the top floor of the Moretti Maritime Tower in downtown Manhattan had been convened for an emergency forensic audit.
Six senior forensic accountants from Deloitte, accompanied by four digital evidence specialists from the State Attorney General's office, sat around the thirty-foot mahogany conference table, reviewing decrypted hard drives extracted from Julian Sterling’s private law office.
I sat at the head of the table, wearing an unbuttoned charcoal wool suit jacket, sipping black espresso.
Beside me sat Arthur Ross and Chief Financial Auditor David Sterling.
"The paper trail recovered from Julian Sterling’s office is far more dangerous than a domestic embezzlement scheme, Alessandro," Arthur Ross reported, tapping his digital stylus against the wall-mounted projection screen. "Evelyn Crane wasn't acting as an isolated grifter. Look at the financial routing architecture."
An illuminated corporate network diagram populated the screen:
PARENT ENTITY: MERIDIAN MARITIME LOGISTICS LLC (ZURICH)
MANAGING DIRECTOR: HARRISON VANCE (ESTRANGED COUSIN)
OFFSHORE OPERATING SLUSH FUND: $42,000,000.00
PRIMARY INFORMANTS: EVELYN CRANE // JULIAN STERLING.
"Harrison Vance," I said, my voice dropping into an octave of lethal, subterranean iron.
"Exactly," Arthur confirmed. "Harrison Vance has spent three years attempting to force a hostile takeover of our deepwater container terminals at the Port of Newark. Evelyn Crane was providing Harrison with your daily executive schedules, your private estate visitor logs, and the internal financial authorizations for the Moretti Maritime Trust."
David Sterling leaned forward, sliding an unsealed, red-tabbed legal dossier across the table.
"Evelyn was paid an eight-thousand-dollar monthly retainer wired through Grand Cayman to maintain surveillance on your private residence, Alessandro," David revealed. "They intended to use the fabricated household budget discrepancies to initiate an emergency shareholder audit next month, declare your private management negligent, and force a judicial restructuring of the sixty-million-dollar maritime portfolio."
I closed my eyes for a single second, drawing a deep, clean breath of the conditioned office air.
The petty theft of eight thousand four hundred dollars in kitchen olive oil and linen services was merely the digital exhaust of a multi-million-dollar corporate assassination plot.
Harrison Vance and Evelyn Crane had calculated that by creating domestic friction and keeping my attention buried in administrative chaos, they could blindside the family at the annual shareholders' assembly.
They had forgotten that the truth does not care about private equity schemes.
"Arthur," I spoke into the warm silence of the room.
May you like
"Yes, Alessandro?"
"Unseal the grand jury warrants against Harrison Vance at dawn. Freeze every commercial line of credit tied to Meridian Maritime across all thirty-two ports in our network. And notify the United States Attorney’s Office that the Moretti family will be delivering the master Zurich ledgers at eight o'clock sharp."
