Chapter 5 - Cornered Predators

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Guests were on their feet, murmuring in disgust, backing away from the front row as if the Cole siblings carried a lethal contagion. Women in designer gowns clutched their necklaces, looking at Vanessa with undisguised horror. The socialites who had fawned over her during the bridal shower two weeks earlier averted their eyes, whispering furiously behind raised programs.

Mason realized the trap had closed.

He didn't look at his sister. He didn't offer a single word of defense. With the cowardly instinct of a cornered rat, Mason turned on his polished Italian loafers and sprinted toward the service exit behind the bar.

He made it exactly four strides.

Two Charleston police officers stepped through the pantry doors, intercepting him mid-sprint. One officer caught Mason by the lapels, driving his shoulder down onto the carpeted floor with a heavy, concussive impact. Mason groaned, his nose striking the wool runner as the metallic click of handcuffs echoed across the silent room.

"Get off me! I’m a guest! I didn't push anyone!" Mason howled, his cheek pressed flat against the floor.

Vanessa dropped her calla lilies. The white flowers scattered across the ivory runner, their stems snapping beneath her satin heels.

She turned to face me, tears finally spilling over her cheeks—not tears of repentance, but the ugly, scorching tears of absolute humiliation and thwarted greed.

"Richard... please," she sobbed, stepping toward the altar, her hands reaching out in a desperate, pleading posture. "You don't understand... Mason made me do it! He had debts with dangerous people! He threatened to hurt my family if I didn't find a way to get the money! I loved you, Richard! I swear to God I loved you!"

"You loved my money, Vanessa," I said, my voice dropping into a quiet, conversational tone through the microphone that chilled every person listening. "And you loved the thought of my early funeral."

I signaled the projectionist one final time.

The third screen opened an audio waveform.

A recorded voice—Mason Cole—spoke from a wiretapped phone call recorded by federal investigators three weeks ago:

"The doctor in Saint Lucia is already on retainer. A synthetic digitalis overdose during the diving excursion. It looks like natural arrhythmia. Autopsy protocols down there are nonexistent if you grease the right palms. In six months, you’re a thirty-eight-year-old widow with fifty million in cash, Nessa. Just get down the aisle."

May you like

Vanessa collapsed onto her knees right on the altar steps, her cathedral veil pooling around her like a shroud.

She covered her ears, screaming a raw, animal shriek that died against the thick acoustic velvet of the room.
