Chapter 6 - The Confession of Vanessa Vance

The interrogation rooms at the federal courthouse in downtown Denver were stark, sterile, and cold. Through the one-way glass observation window, Rachel and I watched as Vanessa Vance sat across a metal table from two federal prosecutors.

Her silk gala dress had been replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit. Her elaborate updo had fallen into limp, tangled strands around her pale, haggard face. The diamond combs and designer perfume were gone; all that remained was a terrified, cornered woman whose calculated ambition had driven her straight into a steel cage.

"I didn't forge the signatures!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her cuffed hands against the table. "Brian brought the files to Marcus! Brian wrote the routing scripts! He told me he was going to divorce that mouse anyway, that she was an anchor dragging him down! He said she was too stupid to manage the estate Arthur left her!"

Across the table, Assistant United States Attorney Torres didn't even blink. He tapped the top of a three-inch-thick legal binder.

"Ms. Vance," Torres said with deadly calm, "we have the encrypted server logs from your personal laptop. We have eighteen months of text messages between you and Mr. Sterling detailing the exact liquidation schedule for the Elm Street property. We have the offshore trust agreement in Belize where your signature appears as the primary corporate officer of Vance & Sterling Holdings LLC."

Vanessa sank back into her chair, her jaw trembling violently. "He promised me... he said we would be in Cabo by next month."

"Mr. Sterling just gave a formal proffer statement thirty minutes ago," Rachel’s voice drifted through the microphone speaker into the observation room.

Torres slid a signed statement across the table to Vanessa. "Your partner in crime just signed an affidavit asserting that the entire real estate embezzlement scheme was conceived, orchestrated, and executed exclusively by you and your cousin Marcus. He claims he was under severe duress and that you threatened to expose company accounting irregularities if he didn't cooperate."

Vanessa’s head snapped up. Her eyes flared with a fury so violent it seemed to suck all the air out of the room. "He said *what*?!"

"He is offering full testimony against you in exchange for a recommendation of protective custody at a minimum-security facility," Torres said, leaning forward. "Which leaves you, Ms. Vance, as the primary organizer of an interstate wire fraud conspiracy with a mandatory minimum sentence of twelve years."

Vanessa let out a low, feral sound that started as a sob and mutated into a vicious, hysterical laugh.

"That sniveling, cowardly worm," she spat, her fingernails digging into the metal table until they bent backward. "He wants to give you a proffer? Hand me a pen. Hand me a damn pen right now!"

For the next two hours, Rachel and I watched through the glass as Vanessa systematically dismantled every defense Brian Sterling had ever hoped to muster.

She opened up accounts the forensic team hadn't even found yet. She handed over the access keys to a hidden safety deposit box in Boulder containing sixty thousand dollars in cash, Brian's personal diaries detailing kickbacks from municipal contractors, and a thumb drive containing audio recordings of Brian explicitly discussing how they would bankrupt me so that I couldn't afford a divorce attorney.

"He kept telling me how easy it was," Vanessa wept, her voice breaking into hoarse, ugly sobs as she signed page after page of state's evidence. "He laughed every time she signed a tax form. He said she was an idiot who would believe anything as long as he gave her a hug and bought her flowers. He hated her because she owned that house outright. He hated that he was living under her dead father's roof."

Beside me in the observation booth, Rachel placed a gentle, reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You don't have to listen to this anymore, Claire. We have everything we need. The civil suit will be a formality. Every single cent will be returned to your trust, with treble damages."

I looked at Vanessa through the glass—a woman who had thought she was so superior, so invincible, reduced to a weeping informant desperately trading away her lover to save her own skin.

"No," I said quietly, feeling a profound, peaceful weight lifting from my chest. "I want to hear every single word. I want to remember exactly what greed sounds like when it dies."
