Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Oath

The sun began its slow, majestic descent into the western hills, painting the sky in breathtaking ribbons of amber, violet, and deep crimson. The evening breeze blew gentle and cool across the valley, carrying the sweet scent of baking bread from the kitchen and the distant, happy laughter of neighbors down the road.

We sat together on the wooden porch swing, swaying gently back and forth in the fading light.

Brooke rested her head in my lap, her eyes closed in deep, untroubled peace, while I gently stroked her hair, feeling the smooth, unblemished skin of her shoulders beneath her soft sweater. The scars Trevor had left behind were fading—both the ones on her skin and the ones etched deep into her memory. Time, safety, and unwavering love were doing their quiet, miraculous work.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the old, battered silver pocket watch—the one I had carried through the dust of deployment, the one that had witnessed every storm we had survived. I placed it gently on the wooden side table beside us, its ticking steady, rhythmic, and entirely peaceful.

"Ethan?" Brooke murmured softly, opening her eyes and looking up at me.

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Do you ever think about the house?" she asked, her voice calm and steady. "About what would have happened if you hadn't broken through that door?"

I looked down at her, my hand resting gently against her cheek, my thumb brushing away a stray lock of hair. I thought of the darkness in the bedroom, the flash of the gunfire, and the cold, unyielding resolve that had kept me alive through it all.

"I don't think about the house at all, Brooke," I said, my voice rich with absolute, unshakeable finality. "Because the past is buried under three feet of concrete, and the future is right here in my arms."

Brooke smiled—a radiant, breathtaking smile that chased away every remaining shadow—and pulled me down for a long, tender kiss as the first brilliant stars of the evening began to pierce the twilight sky. We had walked through the fire, we had faced the underworld’s most ruthless king, and we had emerged victorious. The war was over. We were finally, permanently home.
