Chapter 3 - The Trauma Bay at Dayton Children's

The trauma bay at Dayton Children's Hospital was illuminated by the fierce, shadowless glare of surgical halogens.

Eight medical personnel in blue scrubs surrounded the central gurney where eight-year-old Lily lay beneath heated forced-air blankets. An intravenous line ran pediatric fluids and low-dose fentanyl into her right hand, while Dr. Marcus Thorne, the chief pediatric orthopedic surgeon, examined the high-resolution digital X-rays displayed on the wall monitor.

Daniel Whitmore stood in the corner of the trauma bay, still in his white dress shirt and suit trousers, his arms crossed over his chest, his presence commanding the room without a single word spoken.

Beside him stood Detective Angela Brooks of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Major Crimes Unit, holding an evidence bag containing Lily’s blood-stained canvas sneakers and the recording transcript from Daniel’s 911 call.

"Complete displaced fracture of the left mid-shaft radius with severe periosteal hematoma," Dr. Thorne reported, his face dark with fury. "This isn't a fall from a bunk bed, Daniel. There are three distinct contusions on the upper bicep matching the grip marks of an adult hand. Someone twisted that child's arm behind her back until the bone failed."

Daniel stepped to the side of the gurney.

Lily was semi-conscious beneath the pain medication. Her right hand was resting flat against the plastic bassinet positioned immediately beside her mattress, where baby Maddie lay sleeping beneath a fleece blanket, her vital signs steady on the monitor:

HEART RATE: 118 BPM // CORE TEMP: 98.6 F // OXYGEN: 99%.

Lily’s eyes opened, finding Daniel’s face in the bright light.

"Mr. Daniel?" she whispered.

"I'm right here, Lily," Daniel said, reaching down and resting his thumb against her knuckles.

"Did you find the farm with the blue silos?"

"My planes and my security teams are over the property right now, sweetheart," Daniel told her softly. "And the state troopers are cutting the locks off the basement door."

Detective Brooks stepped forward, checking her encrypted tactical tablet.

"Search warrant signed by Judge Miller ten minutes ago, Mr. Whitmore," Brooks reported. "Tactical entry teams from Montgomery County and the State Highway Patrol are breaching the Peters Road facility right now."

Daniel turned his slate-gray eyes onto the detective.

"Angela," Daniel said, his voice carrying the subterranean iron that had built his billion-dollar logistics empire.

"Yes, Mr. Whitmore?"

"I want Marjorie Sterling brought to this hospital in federal transport irons," Daniel commanded. "I want every donor file, every adoption escrow ledger, and every bank routing slip from that property loaded into my private legal servers before the county prosecutor finishes his morning coffee."

"On it, sir."

Daniel looked down at the eight-year-old girl who had walked thirty miles on broken bone to save her baby sister from being sold to strangers.

He leaned down, his voice rich with an unshakeable, sacred vow:

"Your mother is coming home, Lily. And the people who put her in that cellar are about to lose everything they have ever touched."
