Chapter 4 - The Convoy to Lancaster

By 5:00 AM on Friday morning, the rain had turned into a thick, clinging mist that hung over the Hudson River.

Outside the rear carriage house of the Upper East Side estate, four matte-black armored Cadillac Escalades sat idling in a tight diamond formation, their heavy diesel engines purring with low, muffled power.

Inside the central command vehicle, Lily was wrapped in a plush wool blanket in the rear passenger seat, holding her gray rabbit under her arm, fast asleep.

I sat beside her, dressed in a warm dark-green wool coat Mrs. Ferrara had procured from an upscale boutique on Madison Avenue at midnight, holding a cup of hot black tea with hands that were finally steady.

Dominic sat opposite us in the wide leather cabin, wearing a charcoal wool overcoat over an open-collared black dress shirt. Beside him, Marco Bellini was reviewing the regional highway feeds on an encrypted tactical monitor.

"The gray Econoline van is trailing us three miles back, Don Dominic," Marco reported, his thumb scrolling across the GPS tracking grid. "They picked up our transponder when we cleared the Lincoln Tunnel. Two occupants in the front, armed with automatic carbines. A secondary chase vehicle—a black Dodge Ram with tinted windows—joined them on Interstate 78 near Allentown."

Dominic checked the slide on his custom .45, letting the steel chamber click shut with a clean, lethal snap before holstering the weapon beneath his coat.

"Let them follow," Dominic commanded softly. "We want Arthur Vance’s entire crew in the valley before we close the perimeter."

He looked across the cabin at me.

"Where are your husband's notebooks, Clara?"

I reached into the pocket of my coat, pulling out an old, tarnished brass key stamped with the number 214.

"David kept his personal tools and private logs in a rented storage unit behind my mother's farmhouse in Lancaster," I answered, handing the key to Dominic. "Unit 214. He told me that if anything ever happened to him on the road, I was never to open that unit without an armed federal marshal at my side."

Dominic took the brass key, turning it over in his calloused palm, feeling the worn metal with his thumb.

"Your husband was a smart man, Clara," Dominic said, his gray eyes holding mine with an intensity that made the breath catch in my throat. "He knew that the men who murdered my father wouldn't stop until every witness was buried in the dark. But he didn't know that his daughter would bring his truth directly to my front door."

Lily stirred on the leather seat, her dark curls tumbling over the edge of the blanket.

She opened her brown eyes, blinked against the soft amber cabin light, and saw Dominic sitting across from her.

A sleepy, radiant smile spread across her face.

"Good morning, tall man," Lily chirped, stretching her arms toward him. "Are you my mommy's boyfriend now?"

Marco Bellini choked on his coffee in the front seat, coughing frantically into a napkin.

Dominic didn't flinch.

The hard, terrifying lines of his scarred face softened into a rare, breathtaking smile—a smile of pure, sovereign warmth that completely dismantled the fearsome mafia king.

He reached out, his broad hand gently tucking the wool blanket around Lily’s small shoulders.

"I’m working on it, little bird," Dominic murmured softly. "I’m working on it."
