Chapter 9 - The Mask Slips

The screen behind Derek did not display an architectural rendering.
It turned blindingly white, followed by the sudden, deafening crackle of audio feedback that made every reporter in the front row flinch.
Then, Derek’s voice boomed through the auditorium’s surround-sound speakers, magnified to ten thousand watts:
*“Make sure the kitchen gas regulator is completely detached from the copper main before you set the spark coil. I want the whole structure leveled in under three minutes.”*
The room froze.
The silence that fell over the four hundred people in the auditorium was instantaneous and absolute.
Derek whipped around, staring up at the screen with eyes wide with sudden, feral shock. “What... what is this? Turn that off! Technician, turn that off immediately!”
The audio recording didn't stop.
Marcus’s voice echoed through the rafters: *“What about the kid?”*
And then, Derek’s cold, unfeeling response rattled the glass chandeliers above:
*“She’s six, Marcus. If she survives, she talks. Don’t complicate it. Ten million clears us both. Make sure it looks like an accident.”*
The auditorium erupted into chaotic shouting. Reporters jumped to their feet. Cameras swiveled wildly from the podium to the massive screen, which now displayed high-resolution scans of the $10,000,000 double-indemnity life insurance policy, highlighted in bright red beside the bank records of the Cayman account.
“This is a fake!” Derek screamed into the microphone, his polished veneer shattering into hysterical rage. “This is a deepfake! This is corporate sabotage! Cut the power! Cut the damn power!”
He lunged toward the side of the stage, attempting to yank the power cables from the wall with his bare hands.
“Derek,” a voice echoed across the hall.
It didn't come from the speakers.
It came from the center aisle.
The entire press corps turned. The flashing strobes of fifty cameras pivoted toward the back of the room.
Walking down the red carpet, flanked by two armed State Police tactical officers, was a six-year-old girl in a pink coat.
Lily stopped twenty feet from the stage.
Her voice wasn't loud, but in the paralyzed silence of the room, every single word carried like a gunshot:
“You lied, Daddy. We didn't burn.”
Derek stopped dead in his tracks.
The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. He stared at his daughter as if she were a ghost rising from the floorboards.
“Lily...?” he choked out, taking an involuntary step forward. “Lily, baby... you’re alive? Thank God, you’re alive!”
He tried to drop to his knees, opening his arms for a rehearsed embrace to salvage the scene before the rolling cameras.
“Don't touch her,” I said, stepping out from the shadows of the rear doors and walking down the aisle behind my daughter.
The reporters gasped. Several journalists shouted my name: *“Elena Vance! It’s Elena Vance!”*
Derek looked at me.
The grief, the shock, the performance—all of it vanished in an instant. For a fraction of a second, his true face showed on live television: a face twisted with pure, murderous hatred.
“You should have stayed in the house,” he snarled, the words slipping out beneath his breath before he could stop himself.
Two State Police captains stepped onto the stage, their hands resting on their sidearms.
“Derek Vance,” the lead captain announced, his voice booming over the chaos. “You are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, arson, insurance fraud, and criminal conspiracy. Put your hands behind your back. Now.”
Derek looked around wildly. He saw the exits blocked by state troopers. He saw his high-priced lawyer backing away from him with hands raised in disgust. He saw Marcus Vance being led through the lobby doors in handcuffs, bleeding from a split lip where the tactical team had tackled him an hour earlier.
There was nowhere left to run.

Derek fell to his knees on the stage, the handcuffs ratcheting around his wrists with a sharp, final click, his face pressed against the cold wood as fifty cameras documented his total, irrevocable ruin.
